أَصبَحَ الدَهرُ ذا عَبَث
On the day of my son's death,
On the day my son died
My son, on the day of his death,
Time became given to folly.
Life became meaningless
Fate became a senseless mockery.

Grief has indeed been concealed, but if
Though I was full of sorrow
I conceal my sorrow, yet if
Tears prevail, anguish becomes known.
My tears overflowed unrestrained
Tears overcome me, my grief is laid bare.
