قالَتshe said أَلاwill you not? تُعقِبleave offspring behind قُلتُI said اِرعَويdesist; restrain yourself
قالَت أَلا تُعقِب قُلتُ اِرعَوي
مَنone who كانَwas; is in the condition of ميتاًdead كَيفَhow? إِشظاظُهthe fastening of his saddle or travel gear
مَن كانَ ميتاً كَيفَ إِشظاظُه
She said, “Will you leave no offspring?” I said, “Desist.”
She said, "Will you not answer?" I said, "Let me graze,
She said, "Will you not return?" I said, "Desist!
How can a dead man have his saddle fastened?
He who is dead, how can he be aroused?
How can one who is dead fasten his gear?
إِنَّindeed شَبابيmy youth خانَنيbetrayed me شَرخُهُits prime
إِنَّ شَبابي خانَني شَرخُهُ
وَإِنّand indeed رَحليmy saddle or travel gear حانَthe time has come إِشظاظَهto fasten it for departure
وَإِنّ رَحلي حانَ إِشظاظَه
The prime of my youth has betrayed me,
Indeed my youth has betrayed me, its covenant broken,
The prime of my youth has betrayed me,
and the time has come to fasten my saddle for departure.
And indeed my provisions have come to an end."
And the time has come to fasten my saddle."
