ظِلالُ سمركم تُغنيه عن سَمُره
O sons of al-Mughira, I have a young gazelle in your quarter.
The tribe of Mughira has for me in your quarters a horse
The shade of your brown lances leaves him no need of his acacias.
Whose shade your dark-complexioned women suffice instead of its night talk

The chair’s steed glories in him, a champion,
With it the steed of the eminent man is adorned with a hero
With a needle like a lash from his eyelid.
With a needle-like brightness from its incisor tooth

شهابَ رجم جَرى والنور في أَثره
When the thread flashes from it, you take it for
When its thread gleams, you would think it
A meteor hurled to strike, speeding on with light in its wake.
A shooting star that ran and the light is in its trace

Every tongue longs to become for it
Every tongue wishes that it would have for it
A felt pad, once it has finished embroidering his striped fabrics.
A substitute when it is done with the inscription of its ink
