Wake for a little while, you two sleepers,
Awaken a little, O ye two sleepers,
and offer comfort, if you two can offer comfort.
And make happy if ye make happy.

Are ye ransom for my night, O ye two,
or are you visiting me in my sickness?
Or are ye of some malady returning?

Weep not for me when dead, but weep
for me alive, with streaming tears.
For me alive with tears unrestrained,

following traces after firsthand sight.
Of trackers after once the tracks were plain.
تَطاوَلَgrew long اللَّيلُthe night عَلَىupon مُقلتِيmy eye
كأنَّماas though لَيلُهَاits night لَيلَتانtwo nights
The night has stretched long over my eye,
Long hath the night drawn out on my sorrow
as though its night were two nights.
As though its night were two nights joined in one.
مَاwhat لِنُجُومِwith the stars of اللَّيلِthe night مَعقولَةًhobbled

Why are the stars of night hobbled fast?
Why are the stars of night intelligent,
Not one of them has shifted from its place.
When one therefrom hath not kept fixed in place?
كَأنّماas though النَّسرُthe Eagle هِيضَwas crippled إِذاwhen

As though the Eagle were crippled: when
As though the eagle when he tried to rise
it tries to rise, its two great arteries fail it.
And soar were crippled by his pinions twain.
وَالبَدرُand the full moon قَدhas أَنحَلَهُmade it thin مَحقُهُits waning

And the full moon is wasted by its waning,
And the full moon - his very light betrayed him
so that, in its weakness, it is scarcely discerned.
Till scarce made out from feebleness his wane,
كَأَنَّماas though عَبّgulped الدُّجَىthe darkness عَبّةa draught

As though the darkness had gulped a draught
As though the night a tent of hair had pitched
from its bowl, chipping both its sides.
And split its sides where the ropes strove amain.
وَشَابَand grew gray جُنحُthe darkness of اللَّيلِthe night مِنfrom مُكثِهِits lingering

And night's darkness grew gray from lingering,
And the night's wings from long sojourn were grey
awaiting dawn, terrified at heart,
That erst the dawn awaited, wild with fear.
حَتَّىuntil إِذاwhen ورّسَdyed yellow أثوابَهits garments

Till when he donned his raiment wrought of saffron,
and turbaned the horizons with saffron,
And over the horizons broadcast it in air,

night drew up its hem and quickened its steps,
He shortened his train in fear and hurried his step
in terror, with both temples of its head gray.
As the shooting stars reddened his front in fear,

And its hand grasps its moon as
And in his clutch he held from out his fulness
a bow's handgrip or a polo mallet's shaft.
A rainbow or a cane with reddened grain.

I spent it wakeful, while my eyes
overwhelming sorrow, were two gushing springs.
For overmuch of sorrow rained and rained.
عَدِمتُmay I be rid of هَذَاthis القَلبَheart مِنas صَاحِبٍa companion

May I be rid of this heart as a companion!
I lost this heart for want of friend -
Can you two find me another in its place?
Can ye two not another heart obtain?

For I am clad in sickness from its train.
حَسبِيenough for me كَفَتنيsufficed me نَظرَةٌa glance قَدalready
لَبِستُI wore مِنof دائِهاits malady ماwhat عَرَانafflicted me
Enough! One glance sufficed me; I have
It left within my heart a coal that when
worn the affliction its malady brought upon me.
Dampened, flared up beyond two other coals.
أضرَمَتit kindled فِيin القَلبِthe heart جَمرَةan ember إِذَاwhen
خَبَتit died down زيدَتwere added فَوقَهَاupon it جَمرَتَانtwo embers
It kindled an ember in my heart: whenever
It cowers all night to love exactly as
it dies down, two more embers are laid upon it.
It cowers to searing heat...
يَبِيتُit spends the night لِلحُبِّbecause of love مَرُوعاًterrified كَمَاjust as
يَبيتُit spends the night لِلحَرّbecause of heat
It spends the night terrified by love, just as
And if I say "Dread not" and solace find
it spends the night because of heat.
In patience, it says "Nay, I am base-born."
وَكُلّماand whenever قُلتُI said لَهto it لاdo not تُرَعbe afraid
وَلذand seek refuge بِصَبرٍin patience قَالَit said إِنِّيindeed I am جَبانa coward
And whenever I told it, 'Do not fear,
And this from me who looked not save one look -
and take refuge in patience,' it said, 'I am a coward.'
How would I be if she vouchsafed me twain?
هَذَاthis وَلَمand I did not أُنظُرlook سوَىexcept نَظرَةٍa glance
فَكَيفَthen how بِيwith me لَوif أنَّهَاit were نَظرَتانtwo glances
All this, though I cast only one glance;
A glance - naught but a pint to be drained off
then how would I fare if there had been two glances?
And love - naught but a wallowing in shame.
مَاnot اللَّحظُthe glance إلاّbut مِقَةٌaffection كُلُّهُall of it
وَمَاand not الهَوَىpassion إلاbut اجتلابُbringing upon oneself الهَوَانhumiliation
A glance is nothing but affection, through and through,
O branch festooned about which creepers twine,
and passion is nothing but courting humiliation.
O star the horizon with its fires adorn!
يَاO غُصناًa branch زينَwas adorned بِهِby it عِيصُهُits thicket
وكوكباand a star أطلعًهُmade it rise نَيِّرانtwo luminaries
O branch that adorns its thicket,
After this bridling can one hope for union
and star made to rise by two luminaries,
And after estrangement can one stoop again?
هَلis there بَعدَafter هَذَاthis الصِّدِّrejection مِنany عَطفَةٍtenderness
تُرجَىto be hoped for وَهَلand is there بَعدَafter النَّوَىseparation مِنany تَدَانdrawing near
after this rejection, is there any tenderness
Where do our meetings tend, toward what goal
to be hoped for? And after separation, any drawing near?
In the far end of union with a stroke of pact?
أينَwhere تَجارِينَاour racing each other إلَىtoward غَايَةٍa goal
فِيin طَلَقِthe racecourse of الوَصلِunion بِطَرفَيon two steeds of رِهَانa wagered race
Where is our racing each other toward a goal,
Where is our vying, safe from all reproof,
on union's racecourse, upon two racing steeds?
In the fair tilting yard of joy secure?
أينَwhere تَخَالِينَاour being alone together بِلاwithout كَاشِحٍa spiteful foe
فِيin دَوحَةِthe spreading tree of الأنسِintimacy وَظِلِّand the shade of الأمَانsafety
Where is our being alone together, without a spiteful foe,
Now by God's Chosen One, if I should die
beneath intimacy's spreading tree and safety's shade?
And he who prays my funeral pray began,
فَيَاso O سَمِيnamesake of المُصطَفَىthe Chosen One (al-Mustafa) إِنif أمُتI die
وَقَامَand rose يَنعَانِيannouncing my death لَكto you النَّاعِيانthe two death-announcers
So, O namesake of al-Mustafa, if I die,
Fear not thou the upbraiding of a fault-finder -
and the two heralds rise to announce my death to you,
My blood thereby was spilled and left profane.
فلاthen do not تَخَفfear مِنof ثائِرٍan avenger فَدَمِيfor my blood
حلّlawful وَبلّand freely permitted لكَto you ياO مَنyou who سَبانcaptivated me
do not fear an avenger, for my blood
I swear by Holy House and dangerous pledge
is lawful and freely yours, O you who captivated me.
And what Mecca containeth, and al-Akhshabân too
أُقسِمُI swear بِالبَيتِby the House وَخَيفِand the Khayf of مِنّيMina
وَمَاand what حَوَتcontained مَكّةُMecca وَالأخشبَانand the two Akhshabs
I swear by the House and the Khayf of Mina,
You are in my heart though to estrange I'm chidden
and all that Mecca and the two Akhshabs hold:
Till those who chide me their revenge obtain.
لأنتَsurely you فِيin القلبِthe heart وَإنeven though سُؤتَنِيyou hurt me
بالهَجرِwith estrangement حَتَّىuntil انتَقَمَtook revenge الحَاسِدَانthe two enviers
you are surely in my heart, though you have hurt me
I conjure you before God, return one glance -
with estrangement, until the two enviers had their revenge.
Perchance He cures me of all ills but one...
نَاشَدتُكَI implore you اللهَby God أعِدrepeat نَظرةًa glance
فَرُبّماfor perhaps أبرَأنِيhealed me مَاwhat بَرَانwasted me
I implore you by God: give that glance again,
for perhaps what wasted me will heal me.
