يَاO وَيحَwoe to مَنwhoever بالمَغرِبِin the Maghreb الأقصَىfarthest ثَوَىsettled
حَذَرَfor fear of العِدَىthe enemies وَحَبِيبُهُand his beloved بِالمَشرِقِin the East
Oh, woe to him who has settled in the Far Maghreb,
for fear of enemies, while his beloved is in the East.
لَولاwere it not for الحِذَارُconcern عَلَىfor الوَرَىhumankind لَمَلأتُI would have filled مَاwhat
بَينِيbetween me وَبَينَهُand between him مِنwith زَفِيرٍsighing مُحرِقِburning
Were it not for concern for humankind, I would have filled the space
between me and him with burning sighs,
وَسَكَبتُand I poured out دَمعِيmy tears ثُمَّthen قُلتُI said لِسَكبِهِto their flow
مَنwhoever لَمhas not يَذُبmelted مِنfrom زَفرَتِيmy sigh فَليَغرَقِthen let him drown
and poured out my tears, then said to their flow:
Whoever has not melted from my sigh, let him drown.
لَكِنbut خَشِيتُI feared عِقَابَpunishment of رَبِّيmy Lord إِنif أنَاI
أَحرَقتُI burned أوor أغرَقتُI drowned مَنthose whom لَمdid not أخلُقِI create
But I feared my Lord’s punishment if I
burned or drowned those whom I did not create.
