ياO أهلَpeople of تُدمِيرَTudmir إنَّindeed جَارَكُمُyour neighbor
صِيدَwas caught علىdespite مَاwhat تَرَونَyou see مِنof حَذَرِهhis caution
O people of Tudmir, indeed your neighbor
O people of destruction, your neighbor
Was caught, despite the caution you see in him.
Is prey to what you see of his peril
أسلَمَهُdelivered him حُبُّهُhis love إِلَىto رَشَإِa gazelle fawn
تَعذِيبُtormenting قَلبِthe heart of المُحِبِّthe lover منpart of وَطَرِهhis desire
His love delivered him to a gazelle fawn
His love surrendered him to a tender branch
Whose desire is to torment a lover's heart.
The torment of a lover's heart is from its twist
يَهتَزُّhe sways فِيin بُردَتَيthe two robes of ملاحتِهِhis beauty
كَمَاjust as يَميسُsways gracefully القَضِيبُthe bough فِيin بَهَرِهits splendor
He sways in the twin robes of his beauty,
He trembles in my coolness of his watering place
Just as a bough sways in its splendor.
As the rod quivers in its flashing
وكَانَand was شَوقِيmy longing إلَىfor تَحِيَّتِهِhis greeting
شَوقَthe longing of رِيَاضِthe gardens of الرُّبَىthe hills ِإلَىfor مَطَرِهhis rain
And my longing for his greeting was
And my longing for his greeting
The longing of hillside gardens for his rain.
Was the longing of gardens for its rain
فَضَنَّyet he was miserly حَتَّىeven بِهَاwith it فَوَاso, oh أسَفاًsorrow!
قَدindeed عَادَhas returned صَفوُthe clarity of الهَوَىlove إِلَىto كَدَرِهits murkiness
Yet he withheld even that—alas!
So he resented even it, what a pity
Love's clarity has reverted to murk.
The essence of passion returned to its bitterness
يَاAh حَبَّذَاهُhow dear he is وَإِنand even if جَفَاhe shuns وَسَطَاand he assails
I am pleased with him فِيin وِردِهِhis coming وَفِيand in صَدرِهhis departure
Ah, how dear he is, though he shuns me and assails me!
Oh, I wish, even if he is aloof and distant
I am content with him in his coming and going.
To please him in his roses and in his chest
يُقنِعُنِيsatisfies me منهُfrom him أنto أرَاهُsee him وَأَنand to
أمشِيI walk إِذَاwhen مَاemphatic particle مَشَىhe walks عَلَىin أثَرِهhis footsteps
It is enough for me just to see him, and
It satisfies me of him to see him and to
To walk in his footsteps whenever he walks.
Walk when he walks in his footprints
