O my two companions—and no miser is a companion of mine—

These are the dwellings; where, then, are those tears?

Shall we pass through the courtyards without weeping there,

when these are their dwellings and encampments?

Far from it! Since their departure, the wind of love is not

still, nor are the birds of yearning perched.

They swore against my heart by the magic of their eyelids:

May love ever drain it, and may it be shattered.

And love would consent only to dwelling at Laʿlaʿ.

Alas for the mounts! How far Laʿlaʿ lies from them!

I knew not where they were bound, so I sought no word of them from

a wind that blows or a gleam that flashes.

And it is as though they are in every breeze's path,

for it bears their gentleness and wafting fragrance.

And whenever I offer them a greeting of peace, they race

to convey it from me—the four winds.
