A moon has risen; the air is his sky.

His splendor fills the eyes and souls.

His path and his dwelling tremble before him.

And the space before and behind him is too narrow for him.

And his beauty almost steals away thoughts.

And his radiance almost snatches away the eyes.

And when crescent moons are reproached for their darkening,

his fullness and growth delight and increase.

    ...........

His movements and stillness yearn for him.

    ...........

Let Valencia glory in her lord, whose

defense and aid have guarded the frontiers.

The frontier is charmed, then healed of the enemy's affliction

by his visit, then his protection and his call.

A land that contains him takes pride in him, for

his radiance dispels the deep darkness of its night.

Thus his qualities become clear throughout its regions,

and his blessings overflow through its expanses.

And a man granted strength extends victory's rampart there,

his counsels sparing him the need for his own walls.

A willing giver, he gives his petitioners the choicest gifts,

so it is as though they were partners in his wealth.

O son of the two imams, to whom

glory's lineage and allegiance are ascribed,

who raised its banners upon the path of guidance,

    until its right course and straight way became clear;

and brother of the imam, God's caliph, who

rendered to Him what His vicegerents had safeguarded.

His justice embraced all creation, and there gathered in full

his radiance for their rich and poor alike.

The guarantors of truth's victory are his allies,

and the defenders of his domain, his trusted keepers.

The sons of Isma'il: among them his covenant

endures, along with his promise's truth and its fulfillment.

From Qays 'Aylan—and what could tell you what

Qays is? The radiance of the religion of guidance and its glory.

    وَرَعَوهُ مُكتَهِلاً فَهُم أبنَاؤُهُ

    They raised it in its youth, and so are its fathers;

and they tended it in maturity, and so are its sons.

Upon them rests its support until the Resurrection,

and with them are its banners and its standard.

And they are the ones who fight its enemies,

until its enemies bow before its might.

And they restored its spirit after

its last spark of life had hovered at life's brink.

Thus religion has its crown bound upon it

in honor, and its mantle drapes down over it.

And the pillars of divine oneness stand loftily built,

while polytheism's structure has plunged and collapsed.

The enemy's person, his land, or his defeat—

these you seek, not the enemy's livestock and sheep.

    وَإِذَا تأَبّى فَالإِبَاءُ شَقَاؤُهُ

    So if he obeys you, you are his good fortune;

and if he refuses, refusal is his misery.

And with the Mashrafi sword you hold his cure,

however his sickness keeps recurring in error.

The multitude of his great and small misleads him,

and his rabble bolsters him in his error.

    فَالسَّيلُ أهوَنُ مَا عَلَيهش غُثَاؤُهُ

    Far from it! With that he cannot sway your resolve;

for a torrent's scum is the lightest thing it bears.

Can he avert God's decree from you concerning what

He chooses and wills for your triumph?

Your reprieve let out for him the long tether of hope,

so that its slackening might bring back his heedless self.

But his obstinacy cast him into a deep sea,

and his passions hurled him down from a lofty height.

You granted him respite until his day; and there became for you

a watcher over him—his morning and his evening.

Indeed, we terrify the harm of calamities and their reversals

through you, with the terror of an Indian blade whose edge is honed.

And we say to the world in a voice that carries

its utterance and prayer to the ears of your glory:

Preserve Abu Yahya for us, and be honored

by meeting him while he remains within you.

So there a festival has adorned your palace, bringing

a delegation of glad tidings through its visitors and welcome.

And here it is for you, from a grateful slave born in bondage,

whose praise and tribute never skip a day.

He offered the sheet in verse, and wished that

his soul could take the place of its lines.
