وَنَفىand dispelled الشَكَّdoubt اليَقينُcertainty
The manifest truth became clear,
The certain truth is made clear,
And certainty dispelled doubt.
And doubt is banished by certainty.

تهُمُ…them (verb ending) مِنهُabout it الظُنونُthe conjectures
And the enemies saw what they had been misled
The enemies saw what deceived them,
About by their conjectures.
From their false presumptions.

وَرَجَواand they hoped for ماwhat لاnot يَكونُcomes to be
They hoped for what was not destined,
They hoped for what would not be granted,
And hoped for what would never be.
And wished for what would not happen.

They wished that the loyal one would betray his pledge,
Covenant by a lord who never betrays.
But the loyal one does not betray.

Then, behold, what lay hidden was unblemished,
So the unseen remains safe,
And, behold, affection was preserved.
And affection is protected.
قُلsay لِمَنto one who دانَprofessed faith بِهَجريin shunning me
وَهَواهُand love for him لِيَfor me دينُa creed
Say to one who made shunning me his creed,
Say to the one who shunned me,
Though love for him is my creed:
Whose love to me is a religion:
ياO جَواداًlavish one بِيَwith me إِنّيindeed I
بِكَwith you وَاللَهِby God ضَنينُloath to part
O you who freely give me up, I
O generous one, by God I am miserable without you.
Am, by God, loath to part with you.
You made my heart cheap for yourself,
أَرخَصَcheapened الحُبُّlove فُؤاديmy heart
لَكَfor you وَالعِلقُand the treasure ثَمينُprecious
Love has cheapened my heart
And attachment is precious.
For you, though this treasure is precious.
O crescent moon, do people have spirits without eyes?
(verb fragment)

How strange is the heart that hardens against you,
By souls, not eyes!
While tenderness is soft.
عَجَباًhow strange! لِلقَلبِat the heart يَقسوgrows hard
مِنكَof yours وَالقَدُّand the figure يَلينُis supple
How strange that the heart grows hard
What harm in you smiling
Within you, while your figure is supple!
At your sad lover?

رَّ(completes 'was gladdened') بِمَرآكَat the sight of you الحَزينُthe sorrowful one
What harm would it do you if joy were brought
And being gentle to a passionately loving youth,
To the sorrowful one at the sight of you,
When he inclines toward you.
وَتَلَطَّفتَand you were gentle لِصَبٍّto a lovesick one
حَينُهُhis death فيكَbecause of you يَحينُdraws near
And you were gentle with a lovesick man
So expressions vary,
Whose death, because of you, draws near?
And excuses are many.

For speech has many faces,
And excuses come in many kinds.
