مَنْwho لِيfor me بِأَحْوَرِwith a dark-eyed one فَاتِرِlanguid الأَحْدَاقِthe eyes
قَدْindeed صِرْتُI have become عَبْدَa slave of جَمَالِهِhis beauty الرَّقْرَاقِshimmering
Who will bring me a dark-eyed one with languid eyes?
Who can I turn to, to heal my ache,
Who will bring me the one with wide, languid eyes,
I have become the slave of his shimmering beauty.
For the languid-eyed beauty I'm dying to take,
I have become a slave to his shimmering beauty.
ظَبْيٌa gazelle تَمَلَّكَنِيtook possession of me بِسِحْرِthrough the magic of لِحَاظِهِhis glances
لاَnot عَنْthrough مُبَايَعَةٍِa sale وَلاَand not اسْتِحْقَاقِrightful entitlement
A gazelle has taken possession of me through the magic of his glances,
A gazelle has enthralled me, his charm a fine stake,
A gazelle who possessed me with the magic of his glances,
not through a sale, nor through any rightful claim.
Neither a pledge nor rights did our bond ever make.
Neither by a transaction nor by rightful claim.
بَدْرٌa full moon مَطَالِعُهُhis rising places قُلُوبُthe hearts of ذَوِيthose with الْهَوَىlove
رِئْمٌa white gazelle ثَوَىdwelt بِأَضَالِعِwithin the ribs of الْعُشَّاقِthe lovers
A full moon whose rising places are lovers' hearts,
A moon with the hearts of the lovelorn at wake,
A full moon whose rising places are the hearts of the enamored,
a white gazelle dwelling within lovers' ribs.
A fawn who for yearning lovers will break,
A white fawn who has settled within the ribs of lovers.
هَامَتْfell madly in love بِهِwith him زُمَرُthrongs of الأَنَامِhumankind فَمَاso there is no لِمَنْfor anyone who
أَصْمَتْهُslew him أَسْهُمُthe arrows of لَحْظِهِhis glance مِنْany رَاقِa healer using incantations
Throngs of humankind have fallen madly in love with him; so no one
For him did people in clusters partake,
Crowds of mankind have grown infatuated with him, so there is no healer
slain by the arrows of his glance has a healer.
Yet his gaze's arrows all reason forsake.
For the one fatally struck by the arrows of his glance.
كَتَبَتْwrote بَنَاتُthe daughters of الْحُسْنِbeauty فيِupon وَجَنَاتِهِhis cheeks
لِلْعَاشِقِfor the lover الْمُشْتَاقِyearning
The daughters of beauty wrote upon his cheeks:
The fairest maids wrote of him, for his sake
The daughters of beauty have inscribed upon his cheeks:
“Oh, mercy for the yearning lover!”
A mercy indeed for the lover, the ache,
Oh, have pity on the yearning lover!
قُمْrise فَاسْقِنِيthen give me to drink صِرْفَunmixed الْمُدَامِwine وَغَنِّنِيand sing to me
وَاصْدَحْand sing aloud بِذِكْرِwith mention of جَمَالِهِhis beauty يَاO سَاقِcupbearer
Rise, then give me unmixed wine and sing to me,
Rise, and pour me some wine, make my heartache quake,
Rise, pour me the pure wine, and sing to me,
and sing aloud of his beauty, O cupbearer!
Sing his beauty aloud, don't make my soul shake
And sing aloud of his beauty, O cupbearer!
وَأَعِدْand repeat عَلَىto سَمْعِيmy hearing سَلِمْتَmay you be safe مِنَfrom الضَّنىَwasting sickness
مَنْwho لِيfor me بِأَحْوَرَwith a dark-eyed one فَاتِرِlanguid الأَحْدَاقِthe eyes
And repeat in my hearing—may you be spared wasting sickness—
Whisper again in my ear, you were spared heartbreak,
And repeat to my hearing, may you be spared from affliction:
“Who will bring me a dark-eyed one with languid eyes?”
Who can I turn to, to heal my ache.
Who will bring me the one with wide, languid eyes?
