لَوْلاَwere it not for تَجَنِّيكَyour unjust treatment يَاO شَمْسِيmy sun وَيَاand O قَمَرِيmy moon
بَلْrather يَاO حَيَاتِيmy life وَيَاand O سَمْعِيmy hearing وَيَاand O بَصَرِيmy sight
Were it not for your unjust treatment, O my sun and O my moon,
Had you not been unfaithful, O my sun and moon
Had it not been for your cruelty, O my sun and my moon,
Rather, O my life, and O my hearing, and O my sight,
Rather, O my life and hearing and sight
Nay, O my life, my hearing, and my sight,
مَاnot قُلْتُI said مِنْout of ضَجَرٍvexation مَاwhat قَالَsaid ذُوone possessing خَوَرِfaintheartedness
مَنْwho مُنْصِفِيone who does me justice مِنْagainst سَقِيمِlanguid الطَّرْفِthe gaze ذِيpossessing حَوَرِdark irises against bright whites
I would not have said in vexation what a fainthearted man said:
I would not have complained, nor would the dejected one say anything
I would not have uttered in distress what the faint-hearted say:
Who will do me justice against the languid-gazed one with dark, lovely eyes?
Who will do me justice against the squint-eyed one with languishing eyes?
"Who will grant me justice against the one with languid, striking eyes?"
رَكِبْتُI sailed بَحْرَthe sea الْهَوَىof love فِيهِfor him عَلَىat غَرَرِperil
وَأَنْفُسُand the souls الْعَاشِقِينَof the lovers أَنْفُساًsouls حُرِمَتْwere deprived
I sailed the sea of love for him at my peril.
I rode the sea of passion recklessly
I have sailed the sea of passion for his sake, at my own peril,
And lovers' souls are souls bereft;
And the souls of lovers are souls that have been deprived
And the souls of lovers are souls that have been denied;
لَوْif أَنَّهَاthat they أُحْرِقَتْwere burned بِالنَّارِwith fire مَاnot رُحِمَتْwere pitied
مِنْof كُلِّevery نَفْسٍsoul سَقَاهَاhe gave it drink الصَّبْرُbitter aloes فَاخْتُرِمَتْso it was struck down
If they were burned in fire, they would not be pitied—
If only they were burnt with fire, they would not be pitied
Even if they were consumed by fire, they would find no mercy.
Each a soul made to drink bitter aloes, then struck down
From every soul that patience has quenched and extinguished
From every soul made to drink of patience, only to perish.
ظَبْيٌa gazelle لَهُhe has صُورَةٌُa form فِيin الْحُسْنِbeauty قَدْindeed قُسِمَتْwas apportioned
بَيْنَbetween الْكَثِيبِthe sand dune وَبَيْنَand between الْغُصْنِthe bough وَالزَّهَرِand the blossoms
By a gazelle whose beautiful form has been apportioned
A gazelle that is endowed with beauty that has been divided
A gazelle possessing a form whose beauty is shared
Between the sand dune, the bough, and the blossoms.
Between the sand dune, the branch, and the flower
Between the sand dune, the swaying branch, and the flower.
مَنْwhoever يَرْجُhopes for عَطْفَتَهُhis affection ازْدَرَىhe scorned بِهhim وَلَهَاand played
وَقَدَّهُand he rent him بِلِحَاظٍwith glances مَاwhat لَهُfor him وَلَهَاand with them
He scorns and toys with anyone who hopes for his affection,
Whoever hopes for his affection has scorned it and for her
Whoever hopes for his affection, he scorns him and turns away,
And rends him with glances—what has he to do with them?
He has armed himself with a glance that is not for him or her
Piercing him with glances against which he has no defense,
أَغْرَتْthey lured بِهِto him دَنِفاًa lovesick man أَغْرَىhe incited بِهagainst him الْوَلَهَاfrenzied longing
آلَتْswore لَوَاحِظُهُhis glances أَنْthat لاَnot يَعِيشَlive لَهَاfor them
They lured a lovesick man to him, who set longing upon him.
With it she has seduced someone overtly, with it she has seduced one infatuated
Inflicting upon him a wasting illness that incites absolute madness.
His glances have sworn that none shall survive them—
His glances have resulted that he will not live for her
His glances have sworn that none shall survive them,
صَبٌّan ardent lover وَلَوْand even if أَنَّهُthat he فِيin قَسْوَةِhardness الْحَجَرِof stone
No ardent lover, even if he has the hardness of stone.
A love-struck one, even if he were as hard as stone
No infatuated lover, even if he were as hard as stone.
