    بَلَغَتْ نَفْسُ أُنْسِنَا لِلتَّرِاقِي

    We are a people: if the cupbearer is absent from us,

    the soul of our joy rises to the collarbones;

    and our breaths blaze, and hardened are

    our souls, deprived of the wine of reunion.

    So pass it round, O son of the noble, Abū Yaʿ-

    zā, over our inmost heart, in a brimming cup.

    And give us wine to drink, through which we may keep

    gathering the fruits of the heavenly kingdom above the layered heavens.

    And through it attain the goal, when none

    but the foremost of young men can attain that goal.

    And reward these footsteps that brought us

    to your sanctuary, drenched in radiance,

    with what is required of you by your excellent qualities

    and your virtues of noble roots.

    And hopes have sent a heart flying toward you,

    wrapped in the swathes of longing.

    مَنْهَلَ الْفَضْلِ وَهْوَ عَذْبُ الْمَذَاقِ

    Indeed, by your eminence, they have brought it

    to the watering place of bounty, sweet to taste;

    and shown it a garden of noble deeds,

    bearing the fruits of noble character.

    Grant it the richest gifts, so that

    it does not fear the dreaded prospect of destitution.

    And bestow on it wealth from the treasures,

    for which it fears the thieves' stealthy attacks.

    For the bounty you possess never

    runs out, and man is full of eager desire.

    And your father, Abū Shuʿayb, is my intercessor

    with your eminence, together with the pure-hearted Iraqi:

    that spiritual pole, my master ʿĀbid al-Qā-

    dir, your beloved in the Creator's good pleasure.

    What a companion he is, and what a companion

    to have! And what a refuge you are for fellow travelers!

    مِنْ خَبَالٍ وَدُلْسَةٍ وَشِقَاقِ

    A fellowship whose soil God has purified

    of corruption, deceit, and discord;

    عَنْ دُجَى كُلِّ صَاحَبٍ مَذَّاقِ

    a fellowship whose radiance God has cleansed

    of the darkness of every insincere companion;

    a fellowship that built closeness, watched over

    by the breezes of God with their eyes.

    بِيَدَيْكُمْ كَأْسَ الْمَعَانِي الرِّقَاقِ

    May God increase your bounty and give us to drink,

    from your hands, the cup of subtle meanings;

    and sustain the purest blessings upon

    the Chosen One, Ṭā-Hā, like musk in caskets,

    and upon his family and his companions, all

    together, and their followers, in gracious accord.
