The sons of Fez—whoever parts from them,
The sons of Fez, forsaking them
The sons of Fes, whoever parts ways with them,
their Creator preserves the veil of protection over him.
Upon their creator remains their veil
His Creator will maintain a veil of protection over him.
أَبْنَاءَthe sons فَاسٍFez فَارِقُواpart from فَهُمُfor they

Part from the sons of Fez, for
The sons of Fez, forsake them thus they
Part ways with the sons of Fes, for indeed,
in my view, whoever parts from them is fortunate.
Prosper, those who forsake them
In my eyes, he who leaves them finds true joy.
تُدَنِّسُsullies الأَعْرَاضَhonor خُلْطَتُهُمْtheir company
وَتَكْلَمُand wounds الدِّينَreligion مَرَافِقُهُمْtheir favors
Their company sullies honor,
Their mingling defiles dignity
Mingling with them defiles one's honor,
and their favors wound religion.
And talking ruins the faith, their company
And their companionship leaves wounds upon faith.

They offer welcome, yet nothing lies
They show welcome, though it contains naught
They feign a warm welcome, yet nothing is contained
within the crowns of their heads but evil.
But evil, those who accompany them
Within their heads but absolute malice.
ظَاهِرُهُمْtheir outward appearance أَرْيٌhoney صَفَاbecame clear وَحَلاَand became sweet

Their outward appearance is honey, clear and sweet,
Their facade is honest and pure
Their outward face is clear and sweet honey,
yet colocynth is what whoever tastes them harvests.
Yet evil is what their taster desires
Yet bitter colocynth is what their taster truly gathers.
لَيْسَthere is not لَهُمْfor them إِلاَّexcept النِّفَاقُhypocrisy حُلىًadornments
وَالْخَبُّand guile سِيمَاthe mark مَنْwhoever يُرَافِقُهُمْkeeps company with them
They have no adornment but hypocrisy,
They have nothing but hypocrisy as sweetmeat
They possess no adornment except hypocrisy,
and guile marks whoever keeps company with them.
And wickedness is the mark of those who accompany them
And deceit is the mark of all who join them.
رَائِدُهُمْtheir scout كَيْدٌscheming وَصَاحِبُهُمْand their companion

Their scout is scheming, and their companion
Their guide is cunning, and their friend
Their scout is cunning, their companion
is guile; sheer cunning is their driver.
Is wickedness, and pure deceit leads them
Is a fraud, and pure deception drives them on.
لِذَاكَtherefore لاَnot يَسْلَمُis safe صَاحِبُهُمْtheir companion
إِلاَّexcept إِذَاif كَانَhe is يُنَافِقُهُمْhypocritical toward them
Thus their companion is not safe
Thus, none who accompany them are safe
For this reason, their companion is never safe,
unless he plays the hypocrite with them.
Unless they pretend to agree with them
Unless he meets them with equal hypocrisy.
وَفِيand in النِّفَاقِhypocrisy الْخُبْثُmalice مُدَّغَمٌembedded
يُورِثُbrings ذُلاًّhumiliation مَنْwhoever يُخَالِقُهُمْassociates amicably with them
And malice is embedded in hypocrisy,
And in such pretense, evil is sealed
Yet wickedness is deeply embedded in hypocrisy,
bringing humiliation to whoever consorts with them.
Bringing disgrace to those who befriend them
Bringing disgrace upon whoever humors them.
فَالْحَزْمُso prudence عِنْدِيin my view أَنْto أُنَابِذَهُمْbreak openly with them

وَلاَand not أُرَىI am seen الدَّهْرَever أُصَادِقُهُمْbefriending them
So prudence, to my mind, is to break openly with them,
My wisdom is to turn away from them
Thus, true prudence to me is to cast them aside,
and never be seen befriending them,
And not to see this life befriending them
And never in my lifetime be seen as their friend,

and offer counsel to every young man,
I give advice to every naive lad
And to offer sincere counsel to every young man,
naive, to whom their true nature is unknown,
Whose truths sprouted far from theirs
A naive soul from whom their true nature is hidden,
كَيْso that لاَnot يُرَىhe is seen يَوْماًone day لِغِرَّتِهِbecause of his naivety

so that he may never be seen, through his naivety,
So that his naivete one day does not
Lest he be seen one day, due to his innocence,
deceitfully beguiled by their lightning flashes;
Allow their cunning to trick him
Deceived by the false lightning of their trickery.

and guide the heedless, for fear that
And I guide the heedless lest one day
And I guide the unaware, out of fear that
their night-coming calamities may one day assail him.
Their plots should strike him
Their sudden calamities might strike him in the night.

Into ordeals fell, and exhaustion
Mired in grave ordeals and deep weariness is
is anyone whom their tricks have led astray.
Those their parting made stray
The one who lets their fabrications lead him astray.

And from the path of righteousness outcast
And cast far away from the path of right guidance is
is anyone for whom their paths have not grown too narrow.
Those whose ways would not constrict them
He who does not find their ways intolerable.

And held hostage in the grip of sorrows is
is a person their calamities visit each morning.
Whose salvation their separation grants him
The person greeted each dawn by their disasters.
