طَالَgrew long الطَّرِيقُthe road إِلىَto فَاسٍFez عَلَىfor السَّاعِيthe traveler
مُضَاعَفُmultiplied الشَّوْقِlonging بِالآنَاءِwith the moments وَالسَّاعِand the hours
The road to Fez grew long for the traveler,
The road to Fez is long for the traveler
The road to Fez has grown long for the traveler,
His longing multiplied with the moments and hours.
My yearning grows with the hours and time
With longing multiplied throughout the watches and the hours.
تَأَجَّجَتْblazed نَارُهُits fire السَّوْدَاءُblack لَمَّاwhen دَعَاcalled

Its black fire blazed when a summons came
Its black fire blazed when it called
Its dark fire blazed up when a caller summoned,
From one calling him to depart from al-Hamra.
To depart from the Red City's environs
Calling him to depart from Al-Hamra.
وَقَالَand said دَاعِيthe caller to السُّرَىnight travel نَادَيْتُI called مُسْتَمِعاًa listener
وَقَالَand said دَاعِيthe caller to الْعَنَاhardship أَبْلَغْتَyou conveyed أَسْمَاعِيmy ears
And the caller to night travel said, "I summoned a listener."
The caller of bliss called me, I listened
The caller of the night-journey said: 'I have called to one who listens,'
And the caller to hardship said, "You brought it to my ears."
The caller of delight delivered my hearing
And the caller of hardship said: 'You have reached my ears.'
وَكُلَّمَاand whenever سِرْتُI journeyed عَنْهَاaway from her قَيْدَthe distance of شِبْرٍa handspan سَرَىstole along
طَيْفُa phantom اشْتِيَاقٍof longing إِلىَfor أَهْلِيmy family وَأَشْيَاعِيand my companions
And whenever I journeyed a handspan away from her, there stole
And whenever I traveled a mile away
And whenever I journeyed from it by the measure of a handspan, there swept
A phantom of longing for my family and companions,
A specter of longing for my people and partisans
A phantom of longing for my family and my companions.

And my birthplace, where I opposed my desire and was not
And the one who led me, when I defied my passion
By my Creator! Though I opposed my own passion, I was not
Obedient to anyone who had forbidden it.
And was not compliant to the one who prohibited it
Compliant to the one who had strictly forbidden it.
وَرُضْتُand I trained أَفْرَاسَthe steeds of تَحْسِينِيmy embellishment وَإِبْدَاعِيand my invention

And I trained the steeds of my embellishment and invention
And I was content with the steeds of my praise and creation
I tamed the steeds of my embellishment and creativity,
Among the gardens of my poems and rhymed prose.
Among the gardens of my poetry and meters
Amidst the gardens of my poems and my rhyming prose.
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen كَانَتِwas الْبَيْضَاءُمِنْal-Bayda; from كَثَبٍnearness

Until, when al-Bayda was close at hand,
Until when the White City was from a hill
Until, when Al-Baydha was close at hand,
Longing for al-Hamra returned, and so did the caller.
The yearning returned to the Red and the caller
The yearning for Al-Hamra and the calling voice returned.
لِمْwhy لاَnot وَفِيهِمْand among them أُصَيْحَابِيmy dear friends الذِينَwho ثَرَوْاprospered

Why not, when among them are my dear friends, who prospered,
Why not, and among them my friends who became wealthy
And why not? For among them are my dear companions who have thrived,
And they are there, between my innards and my ribs?
While they were in it, between my entrails and ribs
And they, within that city, reside between my vitals and my ribs.
فَارَقْتُهُمْI parted from them غَيْرَnot مُذْمُومٍcensured جُوَارَهُمُtheir neighborliness

I parted from them, their neighborliness beyond reproach.
I left them, their company not condemned
I parted from them, their neighborliness entirely blameless—
Far be blame from those who inherited excellence, as all agree!
Far from intimate friends, they inherited virtue by consensus
Far be it to fault those who inherited virtue by unanimous consent.
أَسْتَوْدِعُI entrust to اللهَGod مِنْهُمْamong them كُلَّevery مُؤْتَمِنٍtrusted one

I entrust to God all those among them who are trusted
I entrust God every trusting soul among them
I entrust to God every trustworthy soul among them,
With affection—sucklings at the breast of sincerity.
For affection, to the breast of sincerity, suckling
Who is faithful to affection, suckling from the breast of truth.
