The mouth of time smiles, revealing the light of your guidance.

O peerless one, from whose sea nations have drunk.

Fez rejoiced at meeting you when you arrived there.

And Fez, but for the radiance of your presence, would be nothing.

So her splendor, through you, my lord, is harmoniously arrayed.

And her gladness, through you, my lord, is made whole.

You gladdened your servant when he came to you downcast.

Indeed, heartache ends with nearness to you.

He came to you seeking the path of the Nasiriyya, for

In the Nasiriyya there is victory that never ends.

Ah, the longing for it—how precious it was!

For its like, the swift-paced she-camels make ready.

You bade him wait until tomorrow, so he spent the night sleepless.

Yearning comes to his aid when dreaming eludes him.

He addresses the night, that its blackness may part in a smile,

To reveal the mouth of dawn, so a beacon for hopes appears.

O ambergris of night, restore the camphor of morning!

Because you last so long, old age has almost overtaken me.

If you do not grant me a dawn, I shall cry out in sorrow:

Alas, my heart burns because of one whose heart is cold!

May you ever remain a torch of knowledge from which light is drawn,

When the darknesses of ignorance appear, crowding together.
