    Say to the one who will not cease his obscenity:

    Have you felt secure from God's stratagem and His crushing might?

    Or are you beyond death's aim,

    having paid no heed to its arrows and its pursuit?

    Far from it! You are already in the maw of that which

    annihilated past generations with its battering.

    It assailed ʿAd, Shaddad, and Luq—

    —man, and felled his vulture in its nest.

    It ended the two tribes, Jadis and its Tasm,

    and its destroyer, the treacherous killer who raided his hut.

    It turned Dara away from his heights and his home,

    and assassinated the destroyer of his throne in his bed.

    And it crushed the two sons of Baghid, like the two sons of Wa'il,

    and their numbers exceeded the gravel where it lay strewn,

    including everyone who filled the gathering with his wealth,

    when his spacious floor grew too narrow for his furnishings.

    Its molars ground them with the grinding of a millstone

    that passed over the harvest's dry and brittle parts.

    أَسَدٍإِذَا رَكِبَ الْمَطَا مِنْ هَشِّهِ

    It spared none—ask the witnesses of sense—among

    a lion, when he mounted steeds' backs in his eagerness;

    يَسْبِي الْعَظِيمَ بِظَاهِرٍ مِنْ هَشَّهِ

    and one garlanded with cunning, sly and resourceful,

    who captivated the mighty with an outward show of his cheer;

    شَقِيَتْ عِدَاهُ بِجَيْشِهِ وَبِجَأْشِهِ

    and one made impregnable by his troops and banners,

    whose enemies suffered from his army and his courage;

    غَمْرِ النَّدَى هَطِلِ النَّوَالِ أَجَشِّهِ

    and one endowed with possessions, enriched, and favored with gifts,

    lavish in generosity, his bounty pouring with a thunderous roar;

    بِالْهَمِّ أَضْنَاهُ الزَّمَانُ بِنَهْشِهِ

    and one terror-stricken, headache-racked, and enveloped

    in sorrow, whom time wore down with its gnawing;

    بَهِجٍ بِمَا تَجْنِيهِ رَوْضَةُ قَشِّهِ

    and one scented and perfumed, lovely in his adornments,

    delighted by what the garden of his possessions yields;

    رَقَّتْ سَجَايَا نَفْسِهِ أَوْ نَقْشِهِ

    and one tunic-clad, kohl-eyed, and ankleted,

    whose soul's traits, or his ornamentation, grew delicate;

    صَبٍّ بِمَا أَبْدَى الْهَوَى مِنْ رَقْشِهِ

    and one enthralled by his revered one and his intimate friend,

    lovesick over what passion displayed of its patterned adornment;

    إِذْ ضَنَّ مِمَّا قَدْ حَوَاهُ بِقَمْشِهِ

    and one reviled, whose hands gave his honor away,

    when he begrudged what he had amassed by gathering;

    عَلاَّمَةٍ رَوْضِ الرَّشَادِ مَحَشِّهِ

    and one cultured, refined, and pruned,

    a great scholar whose mowing-ground was guidance's garden;

    and one honored, strengthened, and guided aright,

    a mighty cutter whose sickle annihilated corruption.

    Nothing of their traces remained except the name

    of one who had risen above his wickedness or obscenity,

    or his harm, or his treachery, or his evil,

    or his plotting, or his scheming, or his deceit,

    or his slander, or his sneers, or his taunts,

    or his foulness, or his defilement, or his fraudulent bidding:

    لَمْ يَأْلُ فِي صَيْدِ الثَّنَاءِ وَحَرْشِهِ

    a virtuous person who encompassed all creation with his bounty,

    sparing no effort in hunting praise and luring it out;

    جَاثٍ عَلَى كُرْسِيِّ الصَّوَابِ وَعَرْشِهِ

    or an admonisher whose spear-shaft would not bend,

    kneeling upon right judgment's chair and its throne;

    مِنْ تَحْتِ كُرْسِيِّ الْوِفَاقِ وَعَرْشِهِ

    or a scholar, the suns of whose sciences rose

    from beneath harmony's chair and its throne;

    مُؤْوٍ لِمَنْ ثُلَّتْ دَعَائِمُ عَرْشِهِ

    or one in authority who upheld the truth,

    giving refuge to one whose throne's supports were demolished;

    يَنْحَاشُ عَنْ وَخْشِ الْكَلاَمِ وَوَحْشِهِ

    or a poet whose nature's fringes grew delicate,

    shunning vile speech and its wild expressions;

    ثَبْتٍ عَلَى كَدْشِ الزَّمَانِ وَخَدْشِهِ

    or one patient in calamities, stricken by loss,

    steadfast under time's scraping and scratching;

    بِالْقُوتِ مِنْ خَشْلِ الْفَلاَ أَوْ بَهْشِهِ

    or one renouncing what had grown turbid, content

    with sustenance from the desert's dry doum fruit or its fresh fruit;

    or a worshipper who wears out the mount of his night

    and his day, driving vigor onward through his exertion.

    So follow their course, trailing the mantle of piety,

    if you wish to be shielded from your hardship and its chafing.

    And put on chastity's outer garments and its seamless wraps,

    and pattern your chastity with modesty, and embroider it.

    وَصُنِ امْتِهَانَكَ بِالْوَقَارِ وَغَشِّهِ

    And if you grow poor, do not grovel;

    shield your lowly condition with dignity, and veil it.

    Fear God and His crushing might, and hope for His favor,

    and ride the backs of rectitude's black and dappled steeds.

    How fitting for one who hopes in God and fears Him to

    rise to Paradise's chambers upon his bier.

    And thank your God always, for success lies in

    thanking God for the clouds of His uplifting aid.

    And the reins of blessings are in the hand of the One who

    blessed guidance's garden and its palm grove,

    the rain of creation—may God's blessings be upon him as long as

    the servants live by his downpour and his sprinkling,

    and upon his excellent family and companions,

    each one whose mill ground error to nothing.
