قُلْsay لِمَنْto whoever لِلْعَوِيصِfor the difficult problem فِيin الَّلغْزِthe riddle يُلْهَمْis inspired
قُلْ لِمَنْ لِلْعَوِيصِ فِي الَّلغْزِ يُلْهَمْ
مَاwhat دَوَاءٌremedy لَمْdid not يَعْدُexceed نِصْفاًhalf لِدِرْهَمْof a dirham
مَا دَوَاءٌ لَمْ يَعْدُ نِصْفاً لِدِرْهَمْ
Say to one inspired to unravel the riddle’s difficulty:
Tell whom for the distressed in puzzlement is inspired
Ask the one inspired to unravel obscure riddles:
What remedy does not exceed half a dirham?
What cure has not gone back to half a dirham
What remedy does not exceed half of a dirham,
فِيهِin it لِلْجِسْمِfor the body قُوَّةٌstrength وَنَمَاءٌand growth
فِيهِ لِلْجِسْمِ قُوَّةٌ وَنَمَاءٌ
وَهْوَand it لِلْقَلْبِfor the heart عِنْدَin the view of ذِيone possessing اللُّبِّintellect مَهْرَمْa cause of aging
وَهْوَ لِلْقَلْبِ عِنْدَ ذِي اللُّبِّ مَهْرَمْ
In it are strength and growth for the body,
In it for the body strength and growth
In which lies strength and growth for the body,
Yet, to the discerning, it brings old age to the heart.
And it for the heart with the beloved a ruin
Yet to the wise, it brings old age to the heart?
