وَرَحْمَةُand mercy رَبِّيmy Lord فَهْيَfor it is أَسْنَىthe loftiest الرَّغَائِبِdesired blessings
Peace upon those adornments and virtues,
Peace upon those virtues and merits,
Peace be upon those adornments and noble virtues,
And my Lord’s mercy, for it is the loftiest blessing desired.
And my Lord's mercy, for they are the finest necklaces.
And the mercy of my Lord, for it is the most exalted of desires.
سَلامٌpeace عَلَىupon تِلْكَthose الشَّمَائِلِqualities إِنَّهَاindeed, they are
شَمَائِلُqualities مِفْضَالٍa very generous man غَزِيرِabundant in الْمَوَاهِبِgifts
Peace upon those qualities; indeed, they are
Peace upon those noble traits, for they
Peace be upon those noble traits, for indeed they are
The qualities of a generous man, abundant in gifts.
Are the traits of the Bountiful, Abundant Giver.
The traits of a deeply generous man, abundant in his gifts.
تَقِيسُcompares بِهِwith him مِصْرٌEgypt لَدَىin matters of النَّيْلِgenerosity نِيلَهَاher Nile
فَيَعْجِزُso falls short عَنْهُof him النِّيلُthe Nile عِنْدَat الْمَآدِبِbanquets
In generosity, Egypt compares her Nile with him,
Egypt measures by them her Nile-gift,
Beside the Nile, Egypt measures its own bounty against him,
But at banquets the Nile falls short of him.
But the Nile falls short beside their liberality.
Yet the Nile falls short of him at the banquets of generosity.
وَحَيْثُand where يَدُومُcontinues الْفَيْضُoverflowing bounty مِنْهُfrom him لِوَارِدٍfor one who comes
وَحَيْثُand where يَزُورُvisits الفَضْلُbounty مِنْهُfrom him لِغَائِبِfor one absent
And where his bounty flows unceasingly for one who comes,
Where his abundance still flows to the expectant,
And where his overflowing bounty endures for every arriving seeker,
And where his bounty visits one who is absent,
And where his bounty still comes to the absent,
And where his grace travels to visit even the absent.
وَحَيْثُand where تُوَافِيهِcome to him وُفُودُdelegations الْمَغَارِبِthe western lands
جَمِيعُهُمْall of them مِنْfrom among طَالِعٍone rising بَعْدَafter غَارِبِone setting
And where delegations from the western lands come to him,
And where delegations still come to meet him
And where the delegations of the Maghreb come to him,
All of them—one rising after another has set.
From East and West, from rising to setting suns,
All of them, one arriving just as another departs.
فَتُنْشِدُso she sings مِصْرٌEgypt حَيْثُsince تَعْلَمُshe knows فَضْلَهُhis merit
أَلاَbehold إِنَّمَاonly فَخْرِيmy pride بِبَحْرِin the ocean of الشَّرَائِبِيal-Sharāʾibī
So Egypt sings, since she knows his merit:
Egypt recites, knowing his superiority:
Thus Egypt recites, knowing well his immense grace:
“Behold, my pride is only in the ocean of al-Sharāʾibī.”
“My pride is in the sea of outstanding merits.”
Truly, my utmost pride lies in Bahr al-Shara'ibi!
وتَأْمُلُand she hopes أنْthat يَبْقَىhe will remain لَهَاfor her بِبَقَائِهَاas long as she endures
كمَاlike النِّيلُthe Nile غَمْرَoverflowing in النِّيلِbounty (Nile wordplay) عَذْبِsweet in الْمَشَارِبِdrinking waters
And she hopes he will remain hers as long as she endures,
And she hopes that by his remaining with her
And she hopes he will remain for her as long as she endures,
Like the Nile, overflowing in bounty, sweet to drink.
She will keep, like the Nile, sweet flowing water.
Just as the abundant flood of the Nile offers the sweetest of waters.
