يَاO لُجَّةًa deep sea عِلْماًin knowledge وَدِيمَةَand a steady rain نَائِلِof bounty
كِلْتَاهُمَاboth of them مَدَدُthe aid الْعُلاَof eminence قَدْindeed عَلَّهَاgave it drink anew
O deep sea of knowledge and steady rain of bounty!
O seeker of knowledge and its fruits everlasting
O vast ocean of knowledge and continuous rain of generosity,
Both have been watered anew by the aid of eminence;
Both gifts of the Most High whom grace envelops
Both are the wellspring of nobility, having repeatedly quenched its thirst;
فَأَطَمَّso it made swell ذِيthis one وَأَفَاضَهَاand made it overflow وَأَجَلَّهَاand magnified it
وَأَصَبَّand made pour ذِيthis one وَأَدَرَّهَاand made it flow abundantly وَأَهَلَّهَاand made it rain down
So it made this one swell, overflow, and grow majestic,
One He has exalted, made overflow and distinguished
He made the former surge, overflow, and grow majestically grand,
And made the other pour, flow abundantly, and rain down.
The other He has guided, granted success and empowered
And made the latter pour down, flowing copiously in heavy showers.
فَتَلاَقَتَاthen the two met فَتَبَارَتَاthen the two vied فِيin نَائِلٍbounty
وَالْكُلُّand both يَغْتَرِفُscoops up الْمَحَامِدَthe praises كُلَّهَاall of them
Then the two met and vied in bounty,
So they met and contended in seeking
Thus they met and competed in the granting of gifts,
And both scoop up all the praise.
While both drew fully of praises abounding
While each scoops up every single praiseworthy virtue.
فَتَسَاوَتَاso the two were equal فِيin قِسْمِهَاtheir allotted share إِذْsince لَمْdid not تَجِدْfind
كُلٌّeach جَمِيعَall حُظُوظِهِof its portions أَوْor جُلَّهَاmost of them
So the two were equal in their share of praise, for neither gained
Equal they became in their share for neither
They became equal in their share, since neither could claim
All its allotted portions, or the greater part of them.
Found in full its fortunes or sum of them rounding
To possess all allotted fortunes or even the greater part of them.
فَاسْلَمْso remain safe لِتَفْرِيجِto relieve الْمُلِمَّاتِthe calamities التِيthat
مِنْهَاbecause of them الْفَتَىthe young man سَئِمَgrew weary of الْحَيَاةَlife وَمَلَّهَاand grew tired of it
So may you remain safe, to relieve the calamities that
So submit to the relief of afflictions
So remain safe, to dispel the heavy calamities from which
Have made a young man weary of life and tired of it.
By which the youth is wearied of life and its pounding
A man becomes weary of life and thoroughly sick of it.
وَاخْلُدْand live forever وَمِثْلُكَand one like you وَهْوَand he is أَنْتَyou مُخَلَّدٌmade immortal
وَكَذَاكَand likewise مَنْwhoever مَلَكَpossessed الْعُلاَeminence وَأَقَلَّهَاand bore it aloft
And live forever: one like you—and that is you—is immortal,
And live forever, for the like of you lives forever
And live forever! For one like you—who is indeed you—is immortalized,
As is whoever possesses eminence and bears it aloft.
As does the owner of glory and its wielding astounding
As is anyone who masters the heights of nobility and bears its weight.
