نَفْسِيmy soul الْفِدَاءُthe ransom لِمَنْfor him who أَبَانَbanished هُجُوعِيmy slumber
وَلَهِيmy passionate yearning بِهِfor him مُذْsince أَنْthat حَلَّsettled in ضُلُوعِيmy ribs
May my soul be ransom for him who banished my slumber.
My soul is a sacrifice for the one who knows my longing,
May my soul be a ransom for the one who banished my slumber,
I have yearned for him since he settled within my ribs.
And I have been devoted to him since my heart cleaved.
My passion for him has burned ever since he made his home within my ribs.
ظَبْيٌa gazelle كَلِفْتُI became enamored بِحُسْنِهِof his beauty وَأَطَاعَنِيand obeyed me
فِيin حُبِّهِlove for him ذُلِّيmy abasement لَهُbefore him وَخُضُوعِيand my submission
A gazelle whose beauty enthralled me; and obeying me
A gazelle whom I was tasked with his beauty, and he obeyed me,
A gazelle whose beauty captivates me; and yielding easily to me
in my love for him were my abasement before him and my submission.
In his love my submission and humility to him.
In my love for him are my own humility and surrender.
كَالْبَدْرِlike the full moon إِلاَّexcept أَنَّهُthat he أَبَداًalways يُرَىis seen
مُتَهَلِّلاًbeaming كَالْبَدْرِlike the full moon وَقْتَat the time of طُلُوعِrising
Like the full moon, except that he is always seen
Like the moon, except he is always seen
He is like the full moon, save that he is always seen
beaming like the full moon at its rising.
Radiant like the rising moon.
Beaming radiantly, just as the full moon does when it rises.
لَبَّىanswered مَحَاسِنَهُhis charms صَفَاءُpurity مَوَدَّتِيmy affection
فَغَدَوْتُso I became حِلْفَa sworn companion of صَبَابَةٍardent longing وَوُلُوعِand ardor
The purity of my affection answered his charms,
The clarity of my affection obeyed his beauty,
The purity of my affection answered the call of his charms,
so I became the sworn companion of longing and ardor.
So I became the oath of a youth and his passion.
And so I became a sworn ally of ardent love and passion.
دَيْنِيthe debt owed me عَلَىupon الأَيَامِthe days بَذْلُgranting وِصَالِهِunion with him
حَتَّىso that أَفُوزَI may attain بِأَنْسِيwith my companionship الْمَمْنُوعِwithheld
The days owe me the gift of union with him,
My debt to the days is giving his company
My rightful claim upon the days is that they bestow his union,
so that I may attain the companionship withheld from me.
Until I attain my forbidden bliss.
So that I may finally attain my long-forbidden intimacy.
وَأُخَاطِبُand I address الْبَدْرَthe full moon الْمُنِيرَshining إِذَاwhen بَدَاit appears
يَاO بَدْرُfull moon إِنَّindeed الْبَدْرَthe full moon مِنْfrom يَرْبُوعِYarbūʿ
And I address the shining full moon when it appears:
And I address the shining moon when it appears,
And I address the luminous full moon whenever it appears:
O full moon, indeed the full moon is from Yarbūʿ.
"O moon, the moon belongs to Rabwah."
"O full moon, indeed the true full moon is from the tribe of Yarbu'!"
