    مَا يَنْقَضِي لِي مِنْهُمَا عَجَبُ

    Lamta has figs and grapes;

my wonder at them both never ends.

Its tender red grapes and its white grapes,

if compared, are ruby and gold.

And the black fig finds its likeness in—

and there is no lie in what I claim—

    ointment jars assembled from ambergris,

with musk and thick white honey in their bellies.

So they never appear in their picking baskets

    without a blaze of appetite,

threatening that appetite will not be content

except by eating more than is fitting.
