    Indeed, the esteemed leader was borne,

    The chief of teachers, above people's heads.

    تُشَيِّعُهُ لِلْقُبُورِ النُّفُوسْ

    They weep for him—a precious one has passed away;

    Souls escort him to the graves.

    And the students used to escort him

    Home from the study circles.

    So, my Lord, have mercy on him, and show mercy through him.

    And clothe him in forgiveness, the finest robe.

    And lodge him in the chambers of divine favor,

    For no misery has dwelt in those abodes.

    And lavish hospitality upon him for having recited

    Your Book to the seated seekers of bounty.

    And gladden him with eternity in a garden,

    For he used to gladden those beset by misfortune.

    May you be rewarded, Abu Zayd, esteemed one,

    With great increase beyond the foundations,

    And a draught from the Pool, the Messenger's Pool—

    Blessings be upon him—in the finest cups.

    And may remembrance comfort you in a pit

    That held, in your person, an ocean and the light of suns:

    Abundant knowledge and a radiant face,

    And a lowered wing, along with gentleness of nature.

    وَعِشْتَ غَنِيّاً بِدُونِ فُلُوسْ

    I wept for you when you departed, worthy of praise;

    And you lived rich without money.

    أُخَلِّدُ ذِكْرَكُمُ فِي الطُّرُوسْ

    And you sought—and I could not secure—your immortality;

    I immortalize your memory on the written pages.

    And I said to one seeking your like:

    Take solace: there is no perfume after ʿArūs.
