    فَراقَ الكَلامُ وَراقَ النَّسِيبْ

    I spoke of your eminence by the man of letters' judgment;

    So the words delighted, and the love-verse delighted.

    And the unusual came leading the wondrous,

    And the wondrous came leading the unusual.

    May you be rewarded for that with which you strengthened

    The man of letters' wing, by the All-Hearing, the Answerer.

    As though I had received what he received,

    So mine is the fullest share of joy.

    So my thanks for your favors are with him,

    And mine are the parched land's thanks for rain.

    And my words—your kindness having stirred me

    As the east wind stirs a tender bough—are:

    وَفَاسُكَ مِصْرٌ وَأَنْتَ الْخَصِيبْ

    May you endure, your bounty ever hoped for;

    And your Fez is Egypt, and you are al-Khasib.
