I composed verse on the one who displays

    Beautiful qualities.

And it emerged like a necklace

Around the neck of a she-oryx.

In the hand of hopes, strung

    By the prince’s bounty.

A prince whose mark is on

    The broken one’s wing.

The oppressed seek refuge in him:

    And what an excellent protector!

His is the charge of lions

And the deadly assault of hawks.

And in him is a maiden’s modesty

And the forbearance of the trustworthy,

And the self-restraint of the devout,

    And the benefit of rain,

    And the fragrance of musk,

And the beauty of the moon.

May you remain the radiance of kingship,

    Illuminating bright brows.

You give the affectionate another draught

    From the cup of gifts.

    O star of good fortune,

    And fountain of life,

    O my lord Ismail,

    O sun of kings!

    Through praising you, speech became

    Like pearls upon strings.

And it almost, through its ease

    For whoever weaves it,

    Attains without intent

    Delicate traits.

    As from Najd wafts

    The fragrance of tender plants.

Grows richer in savor through it

    The discerning man’s ʿarār.

And he finds joy who suffers

    From the beloved’s estrangement.

    And its writer rises

    Above Ibn al-Khatib.

    So take it like honey

    With little sips.

    It echoed—straying from my purpose—

    Love for coquettish women.
