مِنْamong كُلِّevery فَارِسِknight of مَنْظُومٍverse وَمَنْثُورِand prose
Give thanks to Mandusa, best of the best,
I thank the best of virtuous brothers
Give thanks to Mendoza, the finest of the excellent,
among all knights of verse and prose,
Of every eloquent poet in verse or prose
among every knight of poetry and prose,
وَصِفْوَةِand the cream of الصَّيْدِthe noble lords مِنْamong أَعْيَانِthe notables of أَنْدَلُسٍal-Andalus

and the cream of the noble lords among al-Andalus's notables
And the elite of the hunt from the nobles of Andalusia
the elite among the noble lords and notables of Andalusia,
and their celebrated, eloquent speakers.
And their eloquent tongues of great renown
and their most eloquent, articulate, and famous figures.
قَدْindeed نَزَعَتْhave drawn upward بِهِwith him أَعْرَافُthe heights of السَّرَاةِthe nobles عَلَىthrough
مَرِّthe passing of الزَّمَانِtime وَتَجْدِيدِand renewal of الأَعَاصِيرِthe ages
The heights of the noble have drawn him upward through
She has snatched away the customs of night wanderers
The traditions of noble leaders have been drawn to him over
time's passing and the renewal of the ages.
Over the course of time and the renewal of storms
the passage of time and the turning of eras.
وَكَوْنُهُand his presence فيِon ذُرَىthe heights of تِطْوَانَTetouan مَطْلَعِهِhis rising-place

And his presence on Tetouan's heights, his rising-place,
And his being in the offspring of Tetouan his emergence
His rising point is upon the high peaks of Tetouan,
as a full moon of eminence granted her the finest light.
A full moon of loftiness endowed with the best illumination
a full moon of eminence endowing it with the finest light.
فَجَاءَso he proved أَشْعَرَthe finest poet مَنْthose who يَجْرِيrun عَلَىalong سَنَنٍa path
مِنَof الْقَرِيضِverse قَوِيمٍupright غَيْرِnot مَهْجُورِforsaken
So he proved the finest poet among those who follow a path
So he came more eloquent than those who follow
Thus he became the most poetic of those who tread the path
of verse, sound and never forsaken.
A course of coherent, robust verse not forsaken
of upright verse that is never left abandoned.
فَجَارِهِthen match him فيon سَبِيلِthe path of الْقَوْلِspeech مُتَّئِداًunhurriedly

Then match him on the path of speech, with measured pace,
His neighbor in the path of words hosted
So match him upon the path of speech, with careful deliberation,
verse for verse, fine composition for fine composition.
Poetry with poetry and composition with composition
poem for poem, and embellishment for embellishment.
وَجَازِهِand reward him عَنْfor قَرِيضٍverse كَانَwas مِنْهُfrom him سَناًradiance

And reward him for verse that was a radiance from him
And surpassed the verse which had been a tradition
And reward him for poetry that shone forth like a brilliant light
for one entering a tunnel beneath pitch-dark night's wing;
For a night visitor on the wing of starlings
for one entering a tunnel in the pitch-black darkness of night,

and a gift from a beloved, not expected
And the connection from a beloved who is not awaited
and for a connection from a beloved, unexpected by
by his lover, burning in an outcast's fires.
By his ardent lover, fires long extinguished
the lover who burns in the fires of forsaken despair.
أَذَاكَis that أَجْلَىthe clearest مِثَالٍlikeness لِمَدِيحِكَfor your praise لِيof me

Is that the clearest likeness for your praise of me,
Is that the finest example for praising me
Is that the clearest metaphor for your praise of me,
or the coolest sweet water, healing a fevered heart,
Or the coldest fresh water soothing an anguished heart
or is it the coolest sweet water that heals a fevered heart?
وَمُحْسِبُand ample الْيُسْرِease بَعْدَafter الْعُسْرِhardship يُدْرِكُهُattains it

and ample ease after hardship, attained
And the one who expects ease after hardship reaches him
Or is it sufficient ease after hardship, finally reaching
by a father of frail, broken daughters?
The father of weak, little girls
a father of frail and broken daughters?
فَاللهُso God يُجْزِيكَrepay you لاَnot شِعْرِيmy verse وَتَزْوِيرِيand my artifice

So may God repay you, not my verse and artifice,
So may God reward you, not my poetry and rhyming
May God reward you—not my poetry nor my embellishments—
for gracious praise that is never unacknowledged.
For the kindness of praise not recompensed
for beautiful praise that shall never be denied.
لَهِنَّكَindeed you are الْمَرْءَthe man أَهْدَىgave الدُّرَّpearls مُنْتَثِراًscattered

Indeed, you are the man who offered scattered pearls
For you have gifted the man scattering pearls
By God, you are the man who gifted scattered pearls
on an ordered thread to Ibn Zakur,
In a consistent string to the son of Zakour
upon a well-ordered string to Ibn Zakour,
زَاكِرْfilling عَيْبَاتِbags أَفْعَالٍdeeds لَهُof his قَبُحَتْgrew ugly

who fills bags with his deeds, made foul
Remember the ugly deeds which disgraced him
one who recalls the flaws of his own ugly deeds,
by vice in secret, with zeal and strenuous effort.
In private, in absentia, serious and determined
finding fault in secret, with deep earnestness and diligence.
وَقَدْand sometimes يُجَاهِرُacts openly بِالْفَحْشَاءِwith indecency مُنْتَهِجاًfollowing
نَهْجَthe path of الْمُهَاجِرِone forsaking دَارَthe abode of اللهِGod وَالْحُورِand the houris
And at times he flaunts indecency, following
And he may brazenly indulge in vulgarity
And he may commit sins openly, adopting the path
the path of one who forsakes God's abode and the houris.
Taking the path of the Emigrant, the house of God and the maidens
of one who abandons the abode of God and the heavenly maidens.
لَمْdid not يَجْدِهِbenefit him الْعِلْمُlearning حِينَwhen حَصَّلَهُacquired it
بِالدَّرْسِthrough study لِلنَّفْسِfor self لاَnot لِلَّهِfor God بِالنُّورِwith illumination
Learning did not benefit him when he acquired it
Knowledge did not find him when he sought it
Knowledge did not benefit him when he acquired it
through study for himself, not for God—it brought no light.
For the education of the self, not for God with light
by studying for the ego, not for God through divine light.
فَمَاso, not نَضَارَةُthe freshness of أَقْوَالٍsayings مُزَخْرَفَةٍornamented

Thus the freshness of ornamented sayings
So what is the vitality of embellished words
For what is the radiance of embellished words,
in a mind put at risk for every forbidden thing
With a creative mind for everything forbidden
within a mind drawn to every forbidden thing,
إِلاَّexcept كَنَضْرَةِlike the bloom of جِسْمٍa body لاَno حَيَاةَlife لَهُfor it

is only like the bloom of a lifeless body
Except like the verdure of a body without life
but like the glow of a lifeless body
among bodies, and a wall enclosing nothing.
Amongst the bodies behind walls beyond what is encircled
among bodies, or a wall guarding empty space?
إِيهٍGo on هُدِيتَmay you be guided فَدُرُّfor the pearls of الشِّعْرِpoetry أَنْفَسُthe most precious مَاwhat

Go on, may you be guided! Poetry's pearls are the most precious thing
Alas! The pearls of poetry are the most precious
Come now, may you be guided! For the pearls of poetry are the most precious gifts
offered to an accomplished scholar of verse.
Gifted to a learned man of poetry, prolific
presented to an erudite scholar of verse.
لَقَدْindeed أَنَلْتَyou have given بِذَاكَwith that الْقَوْسَthe bow بَارِيهَاits maker

With that, you have indeed given the bow to its maker,
You have gained through that the bow, its strings
You have thereby given the bow to its master carver,
and the steed to the one who races it among the crowds,
And the gaze flowing between the throngs
and the steed to its rider among the racing crowds,
وَالْعَضْبَand the keen sword مَنْone who يَعْتَلِيstrikes from above هَامَthe heads of الْكُمَاةِarmored warriors بِهِwith it

and the keen sword to one who strikes warriors' heads with it,
And the arrow that ascends the zeal of archers
and the sharp sword to the one who strikes the warriors' heads,
and raw gold to the master of the assayers of dinars,
And the blade that executes the critics of dinars
and pure gold to the master assayer of coins,
وَالْمِسْكَand musk مَنْone who لَيْسَis not مُزْكُوماًafflicted with a cold وَقَدْand already سَطَعَتْrose

and musk to one without a cold, while there rose
And the musk whose scent has shone
and musk to one whose nose is not stopped, as its rich fragrance
from it potent fragrances that heal every ailing chest.
Healing every breast in pain
radiates from it to heal every ailing chest.
لاَno غَرْوَwonder أنَّاthat we وَقَدْand indeed قَلَّدْتَنَاyou garlanded us with مِنَناًfavors

No wonder that, when you have garlanded us with favors,
No wonder that we, when you have bestowed gifts upon us
It is no wonder that we, though you have garlanded us with favors,
we offer thanks for them, unavoidably falling short.
Reluctantly lower to thank for the inadequacy
can only offer our thanks with forced inadequacy.
فَأَنْتَfor you are مِصْقَعُthe supreme orator of أَهْلِthe people of الْعَصْرِthe age قَاطِبَةًall together

For you are the supreme orator among all the people of this age,
For you are the file that destroys all contemporaries
For you are the most eloquent orator of this entire age,
passing judgment on them through advancement and demotion.
Elevating and debasing them in order
passing judgment over them, advancing some and holding others back.
فَهُمْso they لَدَيْكَbefore you وَأَنْتَand you are اللَّيْثُthe lion يَذْعُرُهُمْterrifies them

Before you—you are the lion—they, terrified
Thus they are to you whilst you are the lion, roaring at them
They stand before you, and you are the lion that strikes fear into them;
by the roar of your verse, are like cats.
The roar of your poetry like hissing snakes
the roar of your poetry turns them into mere cats.
يَمْعُونَthey mew يَبْغُونَthey seek شَقّاًa share مِنْof غُبَارِكَyour dust فِيin

They mew, seeking a share of your dust in
They throng seeking a portion of your dust
They meow, seeking just a wisp of your dust in
the race for eminence—what is a cat's mew beside a roar?
In the plight of ascension, what bellowing of the donkey against braying
the race for glory—what is the meowing of a cat compared to a lion's roar?
أَعَاذَكَmay He shelter you اللهُGod مِنْfrom عَيْنِthe eye of الْحَسُودِthe envier فَنَلْso strike

May God shelter you from the envier's eye; then strike
May God protect you from the evil eye
May God protect you from the envious eye, so pierce
the envier's eye with nail-like things,
And nail the eye of the envious with nail-like objects
the envious eye with words as sharp as nails,

from your conduct, clothed in every virtuous deed
From the actions of the scoundrel wearing each righteousness
through your deeds that are cloaked in every virtue,
that moves the eminent to honor and respect.
To deceive the eminent with honor and esteem
compelling the greatest of men to honor and revere you.
فَأَنْتَfor you are رَبٌّa giver of جَمِيلٍkindness غَيْرَnot مَكْفُورِunacknowledged

For you are a giver of kindness that is never unacknowledged,
For you are a Lord of beauty not recompensed
For you are a master of beautiful deeds that shall not be denied,
and a sworn ally of beneficence, deeply appreciated.
And you are an oath of sincere work, serious and appreciated
and an ally of favors worthy of the deepest gratitude.

So may God spare you the oppressive hand of a wrathful man
So may God protect you from the injustice of a brute
May God suffice you in repelling the injustice of the wrathful,
who has never reckoned with a watcher over destinies.
Who did not anticipate a watcher over destinies
who fear no watcher over the decrees of fate.
وَاللهُand God يُرْقِيكَraise you أَوْor يُبْقِيكَkeep you مُرْتَقِباًwatchful

And may God raise you up, or keep you watchful
And may God elevate or maintain you anticipating
May God elevate you and preserve you as a watchful guardian
over the foes, for they are the worst of the wicked.
The transgression for they are the worst of villains
over your enemies, for they are the most wicked of the wicked.

And may God guard you in your striving, clothed
And may God protect you in your hearing, wearing
May God watch over you in your endeavors, cloaked
in protection from everything forbidden and feared.
The protection from all prohibitions and hazards
in protection from all that is forbidden and feared.

to God's might through ages upon ages.
To the might of God in the time of turmoil
to the might of God throughout the eternal ages.
