Every day of yours is the loving friend's feast.

O crescent of the feast in fair maidens' eyes!

You are a feast and adornment to all feasts.

So joy to the feast in your radiance!

And joy to you, too, in the feast,

religion's pride and the fortunate one's glory.

Whoever sees in you a crescent at the feast

beholds two feasts at the moment of seeing:

that is, he sees a mighty day bearing witness—

what a witness it is in our faith!

And he sees a sun of splendor come into view,

which the constellations of fortune pass among themselves as a gift.

That is, he sees the face of a noble, generous man,

bending down toward a toil-worn, weary man.

The destitute wins favor from him through destitution,

when he appears in person with bounty.

    لاَ مَجِيدٌ لِعُلاً عَنْ مَجِيدِ

    I loved his lofty virtues, glorious as he is;

for lofty rank, there is no glorious one apart from a glorious one.

His ornaments look lovely upon Time's neck,

just as jewelry looks lovely upon a neck.

So his is the beauty that stirred jeal-

ousy in the maiden adorned with necklaces.

And his is the radiant face that dispels

    the darkness of black calamities.

    وَلَهُ الْعِرْضُ النَّقِيُّ الْجُلُودِ

    And his is renown, sweet in its fragrance;

    and his is honor, its skins unsullied;

    وَلَهُ الْمَجْدُ الرَّقِيقُ الْبُرُودِ

    and his is praise, its necklaces elegant;

and his is glory, its mantles delicate.

And his is excellence whose bounty rivals

the deep waters of the long, far-reaching sea.

And his is the intellect whose radiance dispels

the darkness of heavy, grievous calamity.

And his is the sound nature which, whenever

given more praise, says: 'Is there yet more?'

And his fortune is seen among fortunes

at his grandsire's rank among grandsires.

So both grandsire and fortune are noblest of their kind—

that is, an exalted forefather and fortune ready at hand.

And his is the soul that has earned him

praise from one whose speech is sound,

who, when he speaks verse, rightly follows

    Labid, his equal in song.

Whenever he sets himself to composing rhymes,

all that is near and far comes to him.

It rises through his craft to the Pleiades,

after being a castoff upon the earth.

O Abu Ali, exalted in rank,

pearl of the crown upon a graceful maiden's head!

O son of Abd al-Khaliq, freeborn and most exalted,

when the nature of slaves pervaded humankind!

O son of a lion who filled lions with terror,

so they became like cheetahs for fear of him!

O son of the chief of men, from the finest of men!

O thorn in the throat of one whose people are like monkeys!

Remain a morning in the loving friend's evening,

and an evening in the envious man's morning,

and a sunny day to a lover,

and a dark watch of night to the obstinate.

And remain as you are: bountiful and praiseworthy,

grateful for the bounty of the Mighty, the Praiseworthy.
