East wind of Najd, ah, blow upon us!

For we have a debt to claim along your nightly course.

For often you cooled the burning thirst of a lovesick lover

who yearns for Buthayna or Rudayna.

Tell me truly: have you seen—and never will you see them—

full moons whose rising-place was among us?

They soared aloft toward where you blow, longing

for it; they found repose, while we were scorched.

Have you, then, beheld their countenance, so that you know

that their departure was no light matter?

And have you glimpsed the flashes of their radiance,

so that you know the weight of their parting upon us?

And have you inhaled the wafts of their fragrance?

Then do not reproach a youth they scorched with parting.

And have you perceived anything of their charms?

Then do not look down on us if we weep.

For I swear, had you ever known that,

you would not have carried their fragrance to us,

and you would have envied our yearning for them,

    with a jealousy unlike Jamil's when Buthayna is mentioned;

and become one of our enemies in our love for them,

and embraced hardness and cast off gentleness.

If indeed they journeyed with the moons of dark nights,

and journeying was an adornment to the moons,

they added beauty to the east of lights,

so the west of sorrows was robed in ugliness.

Indeed, they have unleashed—by their claim upon us—

doom through their parting, which melts rock.

See how our minds, from longing for them,

are set dancing by the winds whenever we journey by night.

And see how our livers never cease to burn

on embers of love's anguish, as though a smith were within them.

    إِذَا نُدْعَى إِلَى كَمَدٍ أَبَيْنَا

    Indeed, we once lived without fearing separation;

when summoned to grief, we refused.

And if desires led us astray one day,

when we glimpsed a radiance of theirs, we found our way.

So we have come to this—with reunion the rarest of things—

whenever grief cries out to us, we perish.

And our anguish is eased by this: whenever we

    delight in remembering them, we grow intoxicated;

and wherever we yearn for them,

we see them through inner sight, in our hands.

And through loss we reckon distance as nearness,

    and through distance we reckon thought as weariness;

and we hope for a bearer of glad news of them,

who says, 'Ah, let your eyes delight in these people!'
