Comfort me, you two, for morning has come,
Quench my thirst for the morn has come
Entertain me, for the morning has come,
With the choicest wine.
With the zephyr's gentle breeze,
With the choicest of wine,
وَامْزِجَاهَاand mix it, you two بِلَمَىwith the dark hue of lips غِيْدٍgraceful maidens صِبَاحْbeautiful

And mix it with the dark lips of graceful beauties,
Mix it with the dew of dawn gleaming
And blend it with the dark lips of radiant maidens,
And fill the cups.
And fill up the goblets, if you please,
And fill the goblets!
وَاسْقِيَانِيand give me drink, you two فَلَقَدْfor indeed غَنَّىsang وَصَاحْand called out

And give me drink, for it has sung and called—
Give me drink for the birds now singing
And pour for me, for it has sung and cried out,
The bird of dawn.
Herald the brilliant sun's release.
The bird of dawn.
إِنَّindeed فِيin الْكَاسَاتِthe cups مِنْfrom خَمْرِthe wine of الدِّنَانْthe wine jars

سَلْوَةَ الْمَحْزُونْ
Indeed, in the cups of wine from the jars lies
In the cups there lies a potion
Verily, within the glasses, from the wine of the vats,
Solace for the sorrowful.
To lift the spirits of the sad,
Is the solace of the sorrowful.
فَاشْرَبَنْهَاso do drink it فَلَقَدْfor indeed آنَbecame timely وَحَانْand came due

So drink it: ripe and at hand is
Drink it now for the time is blessed
So drink it, for the time has come and arrived,
An auspicious time.
Since the moon of thought has clad
An auspicious time.

Herself in beauty manifest,
Since the moons of wine began to rise,
In the sky of thought,
And mankind’s guide the gloom forbade
In the sky of thought,

Sorrows, after gathering, were scattered by
As the raven dispelled the darkness
It dismantled sorrows after they had gathered,
The herald of joy,
At the break of dawn afraid.
The harbinger of joy,
مِثْلَمَاjust as قَوَّضَscattered غِرْبَانَthe ravens of الظَّلاَمْdarkness

Just as the ravens of darkness were scattered by
It’s a draft that melts the essence
Just as the ravens of darkness are driven away
The falcon of dawn.
Of those who taste its fervor boon,
By the falcon of dawn.

What a wine! Refined are the thoughts
Surpassing planets in its quintessence
Oh, what a wine! Its meanings are so refined,
Of one besotted with it!
On revelrous nights of June,
He who tastes it is entranced;
فَاقَتِsurpassed الأَقْمَارَthe moons فِيin أََيْدِيthe hands of الْقِيَانْthe singing girls

It surpassed the moons in the singing girls' hands
Blended by Alexandria’s soft winds
It surpassed the moons in the hands of the singing girls,
On dark nights.
With petals from Iskandariyah strewn,
In the pitch-black nights.
مَزَجَتْهَاmixed it رَاحَةُthe palm of الأَسْكَنْدَرِAlexander

بِثَرَى اسْرَانْدِيبْ
Alexander's palm mixed it
Thus perfumed with scent of sugar,
The palm of Alexander mixed it,
With the soil of Israndib.
And aroma of sweet tib,
With the soil of Serendib,
فَلِذَاtherefore أَزْرَتْoutdid بِطُعْمِthe taste of السُّكَّرِsugar

وَأَرِيجِ الطِّيبْ
Thus it outdid the taste of sugar
Resembling with its radiance temerarious
And so it humbled the sweetness of sugar,
And the fragrance of perfume.
An old man’s fondest wish to imbibe,
And the fragrance of perfume.
وَأَشَبَّتْand grew youthful بِسَنَاهُthrough its radiance الأَبْهَرِdazzling

أُمْنِيَاتُ الشِّيبْ
And through its dazzling radiance grew youthful
Serve it to me black coffee dressed
And kindled with its dazzling brilliance,
The wishes of gray-haired men.
To warm and arouse the broken.
The desires of the white-haired elders.
فاسْقِنِيهَاso give it to me to drink قَهْوَةًwine تَكْسُوclothes الْبَنَانْthe fingertips

عَنْدَمَ الْمَطْعُونْ
So give me that wine which clothes the fingertips
Preserved for ages in the casks
So pour it for me, a dark wine that cloaks the fingertips,
In the crimson of the pierced.
By alchemy’s hand immune,
Like the crimson blood of the pierced one.

Till monks were seen to break their fasts
It remained in the vat for an age of time,
Safeguarded by Afridun.
In the days of Abdoon,
Safeguarded by Afridun,

Or when my heart was made distraught
A daughter of the vine whose vineyard was harvested
For the father of Bilqis.
By a beloved late and soon.
For the father of Bilqis,

Reminded by a tryst's memory
And he watered it, so its radiant freshness appeared,

Aristotle.

By my soul, O most beloved in love,
I imagined it, when its potency surged,
In the belly of al-Bannis,
A tempting entertainer fine,
Within the depths of the vessel,

With a face as fair as the full moon,
To be the chanting of monks on the day of the festival,
In Abdun's precincts,
Dark-lashed eyes that hunt and pine,
In the sanctuary of Abdun.

Or my heart when seized by throbbing,
And turned away were my tearful eyes
Or my own heart, when palpitations seize it,
For it is like a madman.
When his love no more entwined,
For it is like a madman,

Memories of bygone days at al-Liwa stirred it,
Would that when severed was my patience
Stirred by the memory of covenants at Al-Liwa,
In the shade of the bān trees.
And enslaved my inner mind,
In the shadows of the moringa trees.

And with my soul I would ransom, O reproacher of my love,
Clothed my body in sickness and pain
And by my soul, O you who blame me in love,
A bewitching young gazelle.
And uncovered my heart pined,
There is a captivating young gazelle,

His face and the full moon are equal in beauty,
He might have feared the Beneficent
His face and the full moon are equal in beauty,
For the two are alike.
Regarding whom we were aligned,
They are identical twins.

لَحْظُهُ الْمَسْنُونْ
What a dark-eyed beauty! It has worn me away—
For worry has ended my soul
Oh, what a doe-eyed beloved who wears me down,
His sharpened glance.
And clothed me in shame outlined,
With his sharpened glance.
وَجَفَىand forsook عَيْنِيmy eye الْكَرَىsleep لَمَّاwhen جَفَانْforsook me

And sleep shunned my eye when it forsook me—
Describing my complexion with what was seen
Slumber shunned my eyes when he shunned me,
His once-bestowed union.
In the urine of the jaundiced maligned.
Withdrawing his bestowed union.
لَيْتَwould that إِذْwhen مَزَّقَtore apart صَبْرِيmy patience الْجَفَاestrangement

Would that, when estrangement tore apart my patience
O spirit of life, reunite the afflicted one
If only, when his cruelty tore my patience,
And captured my reason,
Crushed by overmastering love,
And captured my mind,
وَكَسَاand clothed جِسْمِيmy body الضَّنَاwasting وَالدَّنَفَاand sickness

Think not the heart capable of treachery
And clothed my body in sickness and wasting away,
And wore away my heart,
Or harboring thereof,
And whittled down my heart,

He would fear the Merciful regarding the one he ruined,
Without any fault.

Without any sin on my part.

For passionate longing has destroyed my soul
The Messenger, the Chosen One, the Divinely-aided
For this passionate love has destroyed my soul,
And clothed me in humiliation.
With traits morally opportune,
And cloaked me in humiliation.

And my complexion, through what has befallen me, has matched
Bestowed by God the beautiful character
And my complexion, from what has afflicted me, mimics
The yellow of a date-cluster stalk.
And revelations secreted immune,
The yellowness of the withered palm-stalk.

Overpowered by love.
From the darkness of uncertainty,
Who is overpowered by love.

Or intended treachery.

On the day when the follower of whims is clothed in the garment of disgrace,
From the torment of humiliation.
The night’s bosom was torn by the morn
From the torment of humiliation.

With their brown spears.

Night's neckline was rent, revealing morning's throat,
The garment of night has been torn from the neck of dawn,
O cupbearers!
