مَحَلُّthe object of اخْتِيَارِيmy choice بَخْتِيَارٌBakhtiyar بِمَشْرِقِin the East
The tormented lover says to the astute, discerning man:
The tormented lover says to the astute, discerning mind:
My chosen one is Bakhtiyar, in the East.
"My chosen one is Bakhtiyar in the East;
فَلَوْfor if كَانَthere were لِيfor me بَخْتٌluck وَذَاand this نِصْفُهُhalf his name رَنَاhe gazed
إِلَيَّat me بِعَيْنِwith the eye of الْعَاشِقِthe lover الْمُتَمَلِّقِthe flattering one
For if I had luck—and this is half his name—he would gaze
If I possessed fortune (Bakht)—which is half of his name—he would have gazed
At me with the eye of a flattering lover.
Upon me with the tender eyes of a fawning lover.
وَلَوْand if كَانَthere were لِيfor me رَأْيٌjudgment كَعَكْسِlike the reverse of الذِيwhat بَقِيremained
هُدِيتُI was guided فَلَمْso did not أُبْصِرْI see جَمَالاًbeauty لِأَخْرَقِbelonging to a fool
And if I had judgment, like the reverse of what remained,
And if I possessed judgment (Ra'y)—the exact reverse of what remains (Yar)—
I would be guided and see no beauty in a fool.
I would have been guided, and seen no beauty in a fool."
