إِلَىto السَّادَةِthe lords الأَمْجَادِthe illustrious وَالقَادَةِand the leaders الْغُرِّthe radiant
إِلَى السَّادَةِ الأَمْجَادِ وَالقَادَةِ الْغُرِّ
نُجُومِstars of سَمَاءِthe sky of الْقَصْرِal-Qasr (the palace) فِيin الْعُسْرِhardship وَالْيُسْرِand ease
نُجُومِ سَمَاءِ الْقَصْرِ فِي الْعُسْرِ وَالْيُسْرِ
To the illustrious lords and radiant leaders,
To the glorious masters and the illustrious leaders,
stars of al-Qasr’s sky, in hardship and ease,
The stars of the court's sky in times of hardship and ease,
بَنِيsons of عَابِدِʿAbid الْوَهَّابِخِيرَةِal-Wahhab, the choicest of وُلْدِهِhis children
بَنِي عَابِدِ الْوَهَّابِخِيرَةِ وُلْدِهِ
وَكُلُّهُمْand all of them فِيin الْفَضْلِexcellence كَالْكَوْكَبِlike the star الدُّرِّيthe brilliant
وَكُلُّهُمْ فِي الْفَضْلِ كَالْكَوْكَبِ الدُّرِّي
sons of ʿAbid al-Wahhab, the choicest of his children,
The sons of Abid al-Wahhab, the choicest of his offspring,
and each of them in excellence like a brilliant star:
All of whom, in virtue, are like brilliant, pearl-like stars:
سَلاَمٌpeace عَلَيْكُمْupon you يَاO ذَوِيpossessors of الصَّبْرِpatience كُلَّمَاwhenever
سَلاَمٌ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا ذَوِي الصَّبْرِ كُلَّمَا
أَلَمَّتْdescended خُطُوبُcalamities of الدَّهْرِtime بِالقَاصِمِwith what breaks الظَّهْرِthe back
أَلَمَّتْ خُطُوبُ الدَّهْرِ بِالقَاصِمِ الظَّهْرِ
peace be upon you, O steadfast ones, whenever
Peace be upon you, O people of patience, whenever
time’s calamities descend with back-breaking affliction.
The calamities of time strike with back-breaking blows.
وَأَسْأَلُand I ask رَبِّيmy Lord أَنْto يُعَظِّمَmagnify أَجْرَنَاour reward
وَأَسْأَلُ رَبِّي أَنْ يُعَظِّمَ أَجْرَنَا
وَأَجْرَكُمْand your reward فِيfor السَّيِّدِthe master السَّنَدِthe mainstay الْبَرِّthe righteous
وَأَجْرَكُمْ فِي السَّيِّدِ السَّنَدِ الْبَرِّ
And I ask my Lord to magnify our reward
And I ask my Lord to magnify our reward,
and yours for the loss of that righteous master and mainstay:
And your reward, for the loss of the righteous master and steadfast support:
أَخُوكُمْyour brother أَخُوpossessor of الذِّكْرِrenown الْجَمِيلِfair لِأَنْbecause سَمَاhe rose
أَخُوكُمْ أَخُو الذِّكْرِ الْجَمِيلِ لِأَنْ سَمَا
سَناًin radiance فِيin سَمَاءِthe sky of الْفَخْرِglory بِالْحِفْظِthrough memorization لِلذِّكْرِof the Reminder (the Qur’an)
سَناً فِي سَمَاءِ الْفَخْرِ بِالْحِفْظِ لِلذِّكْرِ
your brother, of fair renown, for he rose
Your brother, a man of beautiful remembrance, for he ascended
radiant in the sky of glory by memorizing the Reminder—
In radiance through the sky of glory by memorizing the Holy Quran.
أَبُوfather of حَسَنٍHasan فَاللهُso God يُحْسِنُshows kindness دَائِماًalways
أَبُو حَسَنٍ فَاللهُ يُحْسِنُ دَائِماً
إِلَيْهِto him لَدَيْهِin His presence بِالْجَزِيلِwith abundance مِنَof الأَجْرِreward
إِلَيْهِ لَدَيْهِ بِالْجَزِيلِ مِنَ الأَجْرِ
Abu Hasan—may God ever show kindness
Abu Hasan—may Allah always bestow His grace upon him,
to him in His presence, with abundant reward.
In His very presence, with an abundant reward,
فَيَبْقَىso may he remain عَلِيّاًexalted (ʿAli) كَاسْمِهِlike his name عِنْدَwith رَبِّهِhis Lord الْthe
فَيَبْقَى عَلِيّاً كَاسْمِهِ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِ الْ
عَلِيِّMost High بِعِلِّيِّينَin ʿIlliyyin مَأْوَىthe abode of ذَوِيthose of الْخَطْرِeminence
عَلِيِّ بِعِلِّيِّينَ مَأْوَى ذَوِي الْخَطْرِ
So may he remain exalted, true to his name, ʿAli, with his Lord, the
So he remains exalted, like his name, beside his Lord, the
Most High, in ʿIlliyyin, the abode of the eminent.
Most High, in the uppermost heavens, the refuge of the eminent.
وَأَلْبَسَنَاand may He clothe us مِنْfrom بَعْدِهِafter him حُلَلَrobes of الرِّضَاcontentment
وَأَلْبَسَنَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ حُلَلَ الرِّضَا
وَعَوَّضَنَاand may He compensate us مِنْهُin his stead الْجَمِيلَthe beautiful مِنَof الصَّبْرِpatience
وَعَوَّضَنَا مِنْهُ الْجَمِيلَ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ
And may He clothe us, after his passing, in robes of contentment,
And may He clothe us, after his passing, in the garments of contentment,
and compensate us for his loss with beautiful patience,
And compensate us for his loss with beautiful patience.
وَبَصَّرَنَاand may He give us insight مِنْfrom بَعْدِهِafter him بِمَصِيرِهِinto his final destination
وَبَصَّرَنَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ بِمَصِيرِهِ
فَنَعْمَلَso that we may work لِلْأُخْرَىfor the hereafter عَلَىin حَسَبِaccordance with الأَمْرِthe command
فَنَعْمَلَ لِلْأُخْرَى عَلَى حَسَبِ الأَمْرِ
and open our eyes, after his passing, to his final destination,
And grant us insight, after him, into our ultimate destiny,
so that we may work for the hereafter as commanded.
So that we may work for the Hereafter in accordance with His command.
فَإِنَّاfor indeed we بَنِيchildren of الدُّنْيَاthis world وَإِنْand even if غَرَّنَاbeguile us الْمُنَىhopes
فَإِنَّا بَنِي الدُّنْيَا وَإِنْ غَرَّنَا الْمُنَى
سَنَحْدَىwe shall be driven وَإِنْand even if حِدْنَاwe turn aside إِلَىto الْقَبْرِthe grave بِالْقَسْرِby force
سَنَحْدَى وَإِنْ حِدْنَا إِلَى الْقَبْرِ بِالْقَسْرِ
For we, children of this world, though hopes beguile us,
For we are the children of this world, and even if false hopes deceive us,
will be driven, though we turn aside, by force to the grave.
We shall be driven by force to the grave, even if we try to turn away.
