الْحُسْنُbeauty فِيكَin you قَدِindeed اكْتَمَلْreached perfection
لَوْif كُنْتَyou were تُوصَفُyou are described بِالْخَجَلْas bashful
Beauty in you would have been complete,
Beauty in you has been perfected
Beauty within you has reached perfection,
had you been known for bashfulness.
If only you were described as shy
If only you were known for modesty.
لَكِنْbut سَلَكْتَyou followed سَبِيلَthe path of مَنْone who
نَبَذَcast aside الْوَفَاءَfaithfulness وَمَاand did not احْتَفَلْcare
But you followed the path of one
But you followed the path of those
But you have taken the path of one who
who cast aside faithfulness and cared nothing for it.
Who discarded loyalty and did not care
Discards loyalty and shows no concern.
غَرَّرْتَنِيyou deceived me إِذْwhen زُرْتَنِيyou visited me
مِنْfrom غَيْرِabsence of وَعْدٍa promise أَوْor أَمَلْhope
You deceived me when you visited me
You tricked me when you visited me
You beguiled me when you visited me
without any promise or hope.
Without promise or hope
Without a promise or any hope.
فَطَنَنْتُso I thought أَنَّكَthat you صَادِقٌtruthful
وَالصِّدْقُand truthfulness عَنْكَfrom you قَدِalready ارْتَحَلْdeparted
So I thought that you were truthful,
I realized you were honest
So I believed that you were true,
yet truthfulness had already departed from you.
And honesty from you has departed
While truthfulness had departed from you.
لَمْnot يَبْدُappear بَدْرُthe full moon وِصَالِكُمْunion with you
لِمُحِبِّكُمْto your lover حَتَّىuntil أَفَلْit set
The full moon of union with you had scarcely appeared
The full moon of your union did not appear
The full moon of your union did not appear
to your lover when it set.
To your lover until it set
To your lover, save to immediately set,
وَجَفَوْتَهُand you shunned him مِنْfrom غَيْرِabsence of مَاany
جُرْمٍoffense بِجَانِبِكُمْagainst you أَخَلْcaused harm
And you shunned him without any
You abandoned him without any
And you shunned him without any
offense that had done you harm.
Wrongdoing on his side
Offense committed to slight your side.
كَمْhow many حِيلَةٍa stratagem أَبْدَيْتُهَاI put it forward
لِرَضَاكَfor your pleasure مَاnot نَفَعَتْavailed حِيَلْstratagems
How many a stratagem I put forward
How many tricks did I use
How many schemes I have devised
to please you—yet no stratagems availed.
To please you, but tricks did not help
To please you, yet schemes were of no avail.
وَقَنَعْتُand I was content مِنْكُمْfrom you فِيin الصَّبَاpassionate love (first part)
بَةِcompletes 'passionate love' بِالتَّطَارُحِwith exchanging verses وَالْغَزَلْand words of love
And in my passion I was content to have from you
And in my youth I was content with you
I was content to receive from you in my passionate
an exchange of verses and words of love.
With flirtation and amorous verse
Yearning, mere flirtation and amorous exchange.
فَصَرَمْتَso you severed حَبْلَthe cord of مَوَدَّتِيmy affection
بِمُدَىwith the knives of الْقَطِيعَةِestrangement وَالْمَلَلْand weariness
Then you severed the cord of my affection
But you cut the rope of my affection
Yet you severed the cord of my affection
with the knives of estrangement and weariness.
With complete separation and boredom
With the blades of estrangement and weariness.
فَالْآنَso now إِذْsince حَمَّلْتَنِيyou burdened me
فِيin الْحُبِّlove مَاwhat لاَnot يُحْتَمَلْcan be borne
So now, since you have burdened me
Now when you have burdened me
So now, since you have burdened me
in love with what cannot be borne,
With love that cannot be endured
In love with what cannot be endured,
وَأَبَيْتَand you refused إِلاَّexcept أَنْto تَرَىyou see
جِسْمِيmy body تُسَاوِرُهُassail it الْعِلَلْailments
and have insisted on seeing
And insisted on seeing
And you refused anything but to see
my body assailed by ailments,
My body ravaged by illnesses
My body assailed by maladies,
عَزَّيْتُI consoled فِيكَover you تَوَلُّهِيmy infatuation
وَأَصَخْتُand I listened attentively فِيكَconcerning you لِمَنْto whoever عَذَلْreproached me
I have soothed my infatuation with you,
I gave you up though it pained me
I have mourned my infatuation with you,
and heeded whoever reproached me over you.
And complained of those who were harsh
And listened to those who reproached me for you.
وَدَرَسْتُand I effaced حُبَّكَlove for you مِنْfrom فُؤَاheart (first part)
دِيcompletes 'my heart' مِثْلَمَاjust as دَرَسَfaded away الطَّلَلْthe abandoned camp's traces
And I have effaced love for you from my heart,
And I erased your love from my heart
And I have erased your love from my
as the abandoned camp's traces faded away.
As ruins are erased by floods
Heart, just as the ruined encampment is erased.
