As for Your favor, in its universal and particular reach,

its young she-camel kneels on the heights of the penitent.

And Your guidance—exalted is Your guidance—holds fast to everyone

whose turning and swerving have kept to error.

And Your bounty, its clouds pouring, is with the one

whose complexion stays yellow in awe of Your majesty.

There draws near to whoever approaches Your door, trusting

in You and hastening, certainty's breast and rear.

And the disgrace You inflict singles out, O Apportioner, everyone

whose exclusive devotion has been reserved for something other than You.

You have rescued from passion's downfall whoever has shown

You, our Lord, his sincerity and purity.

Glory be to You, O God! There is no being

whose branches and roots do not come from You.

Your overflowing bounty embraces all creatures—the bounty

from which existence comes, its veins and its joints.

After bringing us into being, You led us

to a sea whose shells and gems are precious.

Through it, the garden's blossoms have spread their fragrance,

and through it the branch's little bird has sung.

And the pool—its water's nature has grown gentle

through it; its tadpole is intoxicated by its sweetness.

And the sea—through it its fish have swum,

and the land comes from it, its soft sands and its dunes.

Through it the horizon shone; its sun grew bright,

and its crescent, its Sirius, and its Procyon.

All the worlds have borne witness to Your oneness.

Away with anyone whose retreat from You is manifest!

Inanimate matter spoke of this; and living creation—

its clear proofs have dazzled and appeared upon it.

And the world above and the world below—

their attributes and embodied forms have borne witness to it.

Your mercy on my heart, gashed by the blades

of my falsehood; its swelling is hard for me to ease.

If You do not rescue it, O our Lord,

it will be drained by what the hands of error have wrought.

Guard it and stitch it shut with piety, O my Master.

Who but You will guard it and stitch it up for me?

And veil Your little servant in his earthly life, and hide him,

until his grave-pit conceals his body.

Do not ever call him to account according to his deeds,

for his conduct has a split eyelid and a gouged-out eye.

This age—and You know best what

has grieved me—its privations have ravaged me.

It has surely overshadowed me; You know what

my heart endures: aching entrails and gripping colic.

My care, amid the turmoil of its crises,

is a bird with a bare, clipped wing.

The market of its sorrows has surely put an end to joys,

and grief's restiveness cuts happiness short.

Do not surrender me to time, lest they bolt with me

away from those who remember You—its young she-camel and its stout one.

    تَجْتَاحُنِي بِفَلاَ الضَّلاَلِ لُصُوصُهُ

    And if I do so, they will bolt with me away from guidance;

its thieves will ravage me in error's wastelands.

So my means to Your favor is Muhammad's standing,

the purest of creation, with lofty, firmly built glory.

Your purest blessing—may its arak tooth-stick never cease

to sweeten the mouth of his tomb and brush it clean.

And likewise all his family and companions, those whose

swords are guidance's palm trees and its fronds.

So right guidance, thanks to them, holds its necks high,

while error is short-necked, its neck broken.
