The evening at Ra’s al-Tarf delighted the eye of a young man

whose gaze did not turn the head of love’s anguish away from his heart.

Companionship and joy were our allies there, when

the longed-for one appeared before us, saddling his steed.

And the sea, in its clarity, revealed its secrets,

and the tower, from its height, reveals what lies behind it.

And the lofty mountains of Andalusia came into view,

their summits, in anguish, complaining of the Christians.

And Ceuta came into view from there, calling:

O people of the faith of guidance, have you any compassion?

Is there zeal that calls for my cleansing from the filth of

polytheism, through the pure religion of the unalloyed creed?

There I recite, with hopes close at hand,

and trembling has overtaken all who wield unbelief’s might:

Praise be to God, worthy of praise, who inspires it,

who disgraces the Christians and bestows His kindness on those He has guided.
