أَحْرُفٌ أَرْبَعٌ بِهَا هَامَ قَلْبِي

أَحْرُفٌ أَرْبَعٌ بِهَا هَامَ قَلْبِي

وَتَلاَشَتْ بِهَا هُمُومِي وَفِكْرِي

وَتَلاَشَتْ بِهَا هُمُومِي وَفِكْرِي

Four letters—my heart was enraptured by them.

Four letters obsessed my heart

Four letters by which my heart wanders in love,

And through them my worries and thoughts vanished.

And through them faded my worries and thoughts

And by which my sorrows and thoughts have faded away:

أَلِفٌ أَلَّفَ الْخِلاَئِقَ بِالصُّنْعِ الجَمِي

أَلِفٌ أَلَّفَ الْخِلاَئِقَ بِالصُّنْعِ الجَمِي

لِ فَلاَمٌ عَلَى السَّلامَةِ تَجْرِي

لِ فَلاَمٌ عَلَى السَّلامَةِ تَجْرِي

An alif united creatures through beautiful workmanship;

An Alif that connected creations with perfect creativity

An 'Alif' that united all creation through a beautiful

then a lam that proceeds in safety.

A Lam, well-wishing flowed through it

Craft, then a 'Lam' that flows upon peace,

ثُمَّ لاَمٌ زِيَادَةً في الْمَعَالِي

ثُمَّ لاَمٌ زِيَادَةً في الْمَعَالِي

ثُمَّ هَاءٌ بِهَا أَهِيمُ وَأَدْرِي

ثُمَّ هَاءٌ بِهَا أَهِيمُ وَأَدْرِي

Then a lam, adding to lofty honors;

Then a Lam, elevating the sublime

Then another 'Lam' for an increase in exalted heights,

then a ha, through which I am enraptured and know.

Then a Ha, by which I become perplexed and aware

Then a 'Ha' by which I wander in passion and truly know.
