بِحَارُseas النَّدَىgenerosity تُعْزَىare ascribed إِلَيْكُمْto you أَبَاO Abu يَعْزَىYa‘za
فَأَعْظِمْso how great! بِمَاis what يُنْمَىis credited إِلَيْكُمْto you وَمَاand what يُعْزَىis ascribed
The seas of generosity are ascribed to you, Abu Ya‘za.
Seas of generosity are attributed to you, O Abu Ya'za,
How great, then, is what is credited to you and what is ascribed!
So how magnificent is what is ascribed and attributed to you.
أَقُولُI say وَقَدْand already هَبَّتْshe rose فَتَاتِيmy girl تَلُومُنِيshe reproaches me

I say, as my girl rises to reproach me
I spoke, as my beloved rose up to reprimand me
For journeying: travel may indeed dispel affliction.
For traveling: 'Indeed, journeying can drive away affliction.'
دَعِينِيlet me أُعَانِI endure السَّيْرَthe journey أَوْuntil أُدْرِكَI attain الْمُنَىhopes
إِلَىto حَيْثُwhere لَمْdid not أَعْدَمْI lack ثَرَاءًwealth وَلاَnor عِزَّاhonor
Let me endure the journey until I attain my hopes,
Let me endure the journey, so I may attain my desires,
To where I have lacked neither riches nor honor,
In a place where I shall lack neither wealth nor glory.
إِلَىto بَحْرِa sea جُودٍgenerosity مَاؤُهُits water لَيْسَis not آسِناًstagnant

To a sea of generosity whose water is not stagnant,
To a sea of bounty whose waters are never stagnant,
Nor is its taste tart, nor is its lord miserly.
Whose taste is not bitter, and whose lord is no miser.
إِلَىto حَيْثُwhere نَوَاهُits core الْمُنَىhopes مُتَأَرِّجٌfragrant

To where fragrant hopes lie at its heart,
To where the destination of hopes is sweetly fragrant,
And where generosity dwells, and where Abu Ya‘za is.
Where generosity resides, and where Abu Ya'za dwells.
هُمَامٌa magnanimous man إِذَاwhen نَادَاهُcalled upon him مَنْone who ضَاقَgrew constricted صَدْرُهُhis breast

A magnanimous man who, when called by one whose breast is constricted
A valiant hero who, when called upon by one whose chest is constricted
By a calamity of time, is swift to his rescue,
By the calamities of time, is swift in his relief.
وَأَنْقَذَهُand rescued him مِنْfrom مُعْضِلاَتِintractable troubles زَمَانِهِhis time

And rescues him from the intractable troubles of his time,
He rescues him from the severe hardships of his era,
And is for him a refuge against every calamity.
And serves as a sanctuary for him against every disaster.
فَكَمْhow many, then مِنْof حَبُولٍa wily calamity قَدَّhe severed سُودَblack حِبَالِهَاits ropes

How many a wily calamity's black ropes has he severed
How many dark-roped snares has he severed,
With the thrust of hopes, after it had caused choking distress!
Piercing through to hopes, after they had caused choking distress.
أَيَاO عَلَماًa guiding landmark مَاnot إِنْemphatic particle يُضَامُis wronged نَزِيلُهُhis guest

O guiding landmark, whose guest is never wronged,
O eminent peak, whose guest is never wronged,
Nor is he ever seen unsettled by his times.
And who never sees any adversity from his days.
حَتَثْنَاwe spurred مَطَايَاmounts الْعَزْمِresolve نَحْوَtoward حِمَاكُمُyour sanctuary

We spurred the mounts of resolve toward your sanctuary,
We spurred the mounts of determination toward your sanctuary,
With them we cleave a pass, and with them we climb a height.
Cleaving through valleys with them, and ascending heights.
وَجُبْنَاand we traversed إِلَىto مَثْوَاكَyour abode أَفْوَازَdesert tracts مَهْمَهٍa trackless wilderness

And we traversed the wastes of a trackless desert to your abode,
And we traversed the desolate desert expanses to your abode,
May we be rewarded from the overflow of your surging sea.
Hoping we might be rewarded from the overflow of your surging sea.
فَأَنْجِزْso fulfill مُنَىhopes مَنْone who أَمَّsought مَثْوَاكَyour abode قَائِلاًsaying

So fulfill the hopes of one who sought your abode, saying:
So fulfill the desires of the one who sought your abode, saying:
The seas of generosity are ascribed to you, Abu Ya‘za.
'Seas of generosity are attributed to you, O Abu Ya'za.'
