I wrote, my affection as pure as my blossoms,

A greeting like the gardens’ breaths at dawn,

Or else like the wild rose spreading fragrance in a garden,

Where the east wind’s fragrance wafts in the season of heat,

Rivalling the scent of blended perfume, aloeswood, and incense,

And putting musk’s fragrance and al-Shihr’s ambergris to shame,

To one for whom an agonizing longing shook me,

And made my tears flow like pouring rain:

To the most pleasing lord, noble in his lineage,

A true descendant of God’s Messenger, beyond denial.

God’s blessing be upon him as long as the east wind blows,

And upon his family and the companions as long as the turtledove sings.
