أَحْرُفٌletters أَرْبَعٌfour ذَهَبْنَthey departed بِضُرِّيwith my suffering
وَحَسَمْنَand they cut off أَمْدَادَsupplies مُوقِدِa kindler جَمْرِembers
Four letters took away my suffering
Four letters have taken away my affliction,
And cut off the ember-kindler’s supplies.
And severed the fuel of my burning embers.
مَاتَdied بِالْمِيمِthrough the letter mīm كُلُّevery حَيٍّliving thing لِوَجْدِيfor my anguish
وَبِحَاءٍand through ḥāʾ حَمَلْتُI carried إِصْرِيmy burden بِيُسْرِيwith my ease
Through mīm, all that lived for my anguish died,
With the 'Meem', every living thing perished from my longing,
And through ḥāʾ, I carried my burden with ease.
And with the 'Haa', I carried my heavy burden with ease.
وَبِمِيمٍand through mīm مَلَكْتُI gained possession of مَاwhat نَدَّstrayed عَنِّيfrom me
مِنْof شُرُودِfugitive ones الْمُنَىthe hopes فَبُشْرَىso glad tidings بِبِشْرِيof my joy
And through mīm, I gained what had eluded me
And with the 'Meem', I reclaimed what had fled from me,
Of fugitive hopes—glad tidings of my joy!
Of elusive desires, so glad tidings for my joy.
وَبِدَالٍand through dāl دَلَوْتُI drew up دَلْوِيmy bucket مَلْأََىfull
مِنْfrom زَكَايَاwells (likely intended as ركايا) النَّدَىbounty بِأَشْطَانِwith the ropes of نَصْرِvictory
And through dāl, I drew up my bucket, full
And with the 'Daal', I drew my bucket full,
From the wells of bounty, with the ropes of victory.
From the pure springs of generosity, with the ropes of victory.
