جَفْنِيmy eyelid ابْتُلِيwas afflicted بِالأَرَقِwith sleeplessness
لِلَّهِfor God (an exclamation) جَفْنِيmy eyelid مَاwhat لَقِيit endured
My eyelid has been afflicted with sleeplessness.
My eyelids are afflicted with insomnia
My eyelids are afflicted with sleeplessness,
God, my eyelid—what it has endured!
To God, my eyelids found no rest
By God, what my eyelids have endured!
وَطَالَand grew long لَيْلِيmy night فَشَقِيso suffered
قَلْبِيmy heart بِنَارِby the fire of حُرَقِيmy burning pangs
And my night grew long, so tormented was
And my night grew long, so I suffered
And my night grew long, and so suffered
My heart by the fire of my burning pangs.
My heart burned with the fire of my suffering
My heart in the fire of my burning passion.
صِحْتُI cried out أَسىًin sorrow فِيin الْغَسَقِthe dusk
ذَاpossessed of كَلِفٍardent love وَقَلَقِand anxiety
I cried out in sorrow in the dusk,
I woke up in sorrow during the darkness
I cried out in sorrow in the deep darkness,
Filled with ardent love and anxiety:
Exhausted and anxious
As one burdened by infatuation and anxiety.
يَاO دَهْمَةَblackness of اللَّيْلِthe night ارْفِقِيbe gentle
بِمَاwith what بَقِيremains مِنْof رَمَقِbreath of life
O blackness of night, be gentle
O darkness of the night, be gentle
O darkness of the night, be gentle
With what remains of life's breath.
With what remains of my vigor
With what is left of my dying breath.
يَاOh لَيْتَif only طُولَlength of أَرَقِيmy sleeplessness
يَعْلَمُknows كَمْhow much مِنْهُof it بَقِيremains
Oh, if only my long sleeplessness
Oh, if only the length of my sleeplessness
Oh, would that my prolonged sleeplessness
Knew how much of it remains,
Knew how much of it remains
Knew how much of it remains,
وَهَلْand whether لَهُfor it مِنْany فَلَقِdaybreak
And whether it has a dawn.
And whether there is a crack in it for me
And whether it will ever have a dawn.
