    We weep for the loss of your radiance, O Ramadan,

    since sorrows have surrounded us at its departure.

    إِنَّ الْبُكَاءَ لِبَيْنِهَا إِيمَانُ

    We weep for the departure of your adornments, O fairest of adornments;

    indeed, weeping for their departure is faith.

    We weep, and rightly so; yet weeping is too little for them,

    even if a pouring rain were to help us weep.

    We weep for fasting, its merit, and its reward,

    and glorification of God and the Qur'an aid us.

    We weep for our likeness to the angels in you, O

    purest of months, as children have wept.

    We weep for self-discipline, vigor, and the joy of

    breaking the fast, if an artery throbs for it.

    We weep and make others weep for the tarawih prayers, which

    are sweet basil for hearts that have grown pure.

    And our standing in prayer before dawn, when the hills had divulged

    their secrets, and the breeze then divulged them.

    يَرْقَى لَهَا غُوَّاصُهَا الْإِنْسَانُ

    And the bright stars are like shells in the sea of darkness;

    their diver, the human being, ascends toward them.

    يَبْهُو السَّوَادُ بِهِنَّ وَالَّلمَعَانُ

    Or like pearls that slaves have seized;

    blackness and brilliance grow beautiful through them.

    Or like cups that brothers pass around,

    or like blossoms when the garden bloomed,

    or like embers surrounded by smoke,

    or like hopes already encircled by deprivation.

    We weep for you until our eyelids grow sore,

    O ornament of the ages, O Ramadan!

    Why not, when in you the Qur'an descended?

    Why not, when in you goodness grew immense?

    Why not, when in you Satan was fettered?

    Why not, when in you aggression became difficult?

    Why not, when in you the All-Merciful pardoned

    those who sinned, and forgiveness multiplied?

    لِمْ لاَ وَأَنْتَ لِعَيْنِهِ إِنْسَانُ

    For indeed, religion has wept for you as it rightly should;

    why not, when you are the pupil of its eye?
