سَلاَSalé لاَnot سَلاَfound solace قَلْبِيmy heart بِأَرْجَائِكِin your quarters الْغُبْرِdusty
وَلاَand not بَرِحَتْceased نَفْسِيmy soul تَسُومُكِsubjects you بِالْهَجْرِto estrangement
Salé, my heart has found no solace in your dusty quarters,
No peace, no peace my heart finds in your ruins
Salé, my heart found no solace in your dusty expanses,
nor has my soul ceased to subject you to estrangement.
And my soul cannot cease wandering in estrangement
And my soul has never ceased to subject you to abandonment.
فَمَاfor there is no فيِin سَلاَSalé شَيْءٌthing يُسَلِّيconsoles ذَوِيthose with الأَسَىsorrow
سِوَىexcept بَحْرِهَاher sea الزَّخَّارِsurging ذِيwith الُّلجَجِthe depths السُّمْرِdusky
For nothing in Salé consoles those in sorrow,
There is nothing in peace that comforts the sorrowful
For there is nothing in Salé to comfort those stricken with sorrow,
except her surging sea with its dusky depths.
Except for its roaring sea, tumultuous and murky
Except its swelling sea with its dark, rolling depths.
وَأَحْسِبُهُand I suppose it لَمَّاwhen تَرَاكَمَpiled up مَوْجُهُits waves
تَصَيَّعَspilled over فِيهَاinto her اللُّجُّthe deep بِالزَّبَدِwith foam الْمُرِّbitter
And I suppose that, when its waves piled high,
And I reckon, when its waves accumulated
And I reckon that when its waves piled high,
the deep spilled over into her with bitter foam.
The scum foamed amidst it in turbid froth
Its deep waters dispersed within it with bitter froth.
فَأَمْسَتْso she became قَرَاراًa dwelling لِلْيَهُودِfor the Jews وَطَالَمَاand for so long
زَهَتْgloried بِذَوِيin those of الأَخْطَارِhigh standing وَالْمَنْصِبِand rank الْخَطْرِlofty
So she became a dwelling for the Jews, though for so long
So it has become a settlement for the Jews, for long
Then it became a settlement for the Jews, though for so long
she had gloried in men of standing and lofty rank,
It has flourished with the noteworthy and men of high rank
It had boasted of men of eminence and distinguished rank,
كَمِثْلِsuch as ابْنِson of حَسُّونِHassun الرِّضَىthe esteemed وَابْنِand son of عَاشِرِAshir
فَنَاهِيكَso sufficient for you مِنْas a قَرْمٍchieftain وَنَاهِيكَand sufficient for you مِنْas a حَبْرِscholar
such as Ibn Hassun the esteemed, and Ibn Ashir.
Like Ibn Hassoun Al-Ridha and Ibn Ashir
Like Ibn Hassun, the favored, and Ibn Ashir;
So what a chieftain, and what a scholar!
So enough of a coward, enough of an inky pen
What an outstanding leader, and what an outstanding scholar!
فَأَكْرِمْso how noble! بِهَاshe (exclamatory) إِذْwhen حَلَّهَاdwelt in her كُلُّevery مَاجِدٍillustrious man
وَأَخْبِثْand how vile! بِهَاshe (exclamatory) إِذْwhen حُوِّلَتْshe was turned into مَنْزِلَan abode الْكُفْرِunbelief
How noble she was when every illustrious man dwelt in her,
Honor it, since every glorious one has lodged it
How noble it was when every glorious figure settled within it,
and how vile when she was turned into an abode of unbelief!
And dishonor it, since it has become the abode of blasphemy
And how vile it is now, transformed into an abode of disbelief.
