مديحُكَ مَنْ تطالبُهُ برفْدٍ

مديحُكَ مَنْ تطالبُهُ برفْدٍ

هجاءٌ منكَ فيه بلا كلامِ

هجاءٌ منكَ فيه بلا كلامِ

Your praise of one whom you ask for a gift

Your praise from one who seeks your aid

Is your wordless disparagement of him,

Is slander though no words are said

لأنَّك لم تثقْ منه بِمَجْدٍ

لأنَّك لم تثقْ منه بِمَجْدٍ

فتقنَعَ باللِّقاءِ وبالسلام

فتقنَعَ باللِّقاءِ وبالسلام

For you did not trust in his nobility

For you trust not his boasted worth

Enough to be content with meeting him and exchanging greetings.

So with a meeting rest content, and peace.
