جدّك شيبانُ العظيمُ الفخرِ

حقّاً كما البلبلُ جَدّ الصقرِ

حقّاً كما البلبلُ جَدّ الصقرِ

Your grandfather is Shayban, great in glory,

Your ancestor, the venerable, the pride

truly—as the nightingale is the falcon's grandfather.

Indeed as the nightingale is the ancestor of the hawk

نَجْرٌ لعمري بائنٌ من نجر

نَجْرٌ لعمري بائنٌ من نجر

لم تُظلَم الدنيا بأم دَفر

لم تُظلَم الدنيا بأم دَفر

One stock, by my life, is distinct from another.

My life is strange and different from any other

The world was not wronged by the name Umm Dafr ('Mother of Stench'),

The world was not wronged by any misfortune

وأنت فيها من ولاة الأمر

وأنت فيها من ولاة الأمر

لولا دليل كبياض الفجر

لولا دليل كبياض الفجر

while you are among its rulers.

And you in it are among the rulers

Were it not for a proof like the whiteness of dawn,

If not for evidence like the whiteness of dawn

يشرح بالإيمان كل صدر

يشرح بالإيمان كل صدر

لقلت بالدهر كأهل الدهر

لقلت بالدهر كأهل الدهر

that opens every breast through faith,

That exudes faith into every heart

I would have believed in Time, like Time's adherents,

I would have said about fate like the people of fate

مما أرى من سوء هذا القَدر

مما أرى من سوء هذا القَدر

وليس لي في عاجلٍ من صبر

وليس لي في عاجلٍ من صبر

because of the evil I see in this fate,

From what I see of the evil of this destiny

and I have no patience in the here and now.

And I have no patience for the immediate
