جرَّدتَyou mustered عَزْماresolve لماءِfor the water of النيلِthe Nile تصرفُهyou divert it
جرَّدتَ عَزْما لماءِ النيلِ تصرفُه
عنaway from البُثوقِthe breaches إلىtoward إسناءةِincreasing النيلِthe bounty
عن البُثوقِ إلى إسناءةِ النيلِ
You mustered resolve for the Nile’s water, diverting it
You have stripped resolve to direct the water of the Nile
away from breaches toward more abundant bounty,
Away from the quagmires to Isna's bend in the Nile
تجريدَكَyour mustering العزمَthe resolve للأموالِfor the funds تعدِلُهاyou redirect them
تجريدَكَ العزمَ للأموالِ تعدِلُها
إلىtoward الحقائقِwhat is true and rightful عنaway from سُبْلِthe paths of الأباطيلِfalsehoods
إلى الحقائقِ عن سُبْلِ الأباطيلِ
as you mustered resolve for funds, redirecting them
Your stripping of resolve to make wealth just
toward rightful ends, away from the paths of falsehood.
To the realities away from the paths of vanities
إذاwhen الأصابعُthe fingers مُدّتْare extended نحوtoward ذيone possessed of مِننٍfavors
إذا الأصابعُ مُدّتْ نحو ذي مِننٍ
مُدَّتْare extended إليكtoward you بفعَّالas a great doer of الأفاعيلdeeds
مُدَّتْ إليك بفعَّال الأفاعيل
When fingers point toward a giver of favors,
If fingers are stretched toward one with bounty
they point toward you, a great doer of deeds,
They are stretched to you with the actions of snakes
كماjust as إذاwhen هيthey مُدتare extended نحوtoward ذيone possessed of لسنeloquence
كما إذا هي مُدت نحو ذي لسن
مُدّتْare extended إليكtoward you بقوَّالِas a great speaker of الأقاويلutterances
مُدّتْ إليك بقوَّالِ الأقاويل
just as, when they point toward one gifted with eloquence,
As if they are stretched toward one with malice
they point toward you, a great speaker of words.
They are stretched to you with the words of slander
جلَّتْare too exalted مساعيكyour endeavors أنto تُنْثيbe recounted إذاwhen نُثيتْthey are recounted
جلَّتْ مساعيك أن تُنْثي إذا نُثيتْ
إلاexcept بِقيلِكin your speech أوor شرواهُits equal فيin القِيلِspeech
إلا بِقيلِك أو شرواهُ في القِيلِ
Your endeavors are too exalted to be recounted, when recounted,
Your efforts have excelled to flourish if flourished
save in your own speech, or speech to match it.
Only by your saying or its broadcast in saying
ماnever أحدثَhas brought about الدهرُTime توعيراًroughness لمُلتمسٍfor a seeker
ما أحدثَ الدهرُ توعيراً لمُلتمسٍ
إلّاexcept that دُعِيتَyou were called أباAbu (father of) سهلٍSahl لِتسهيلِfor making things easy
إلّا دُعِيتَ أبا سهلٍ لِتسهيلِ
Time has never made a seeker’s way rugged
Time has not criticized a seeker
without your being called Abu Sahl for making it easy.
Unless you were called Abu Sahl for facilitating
