    You have become entangled, O son of Hurayth the base,

    like a sandgrouse in a snare’s noose.

    وإن ونتْ وتراخَتْ فهي للدَّركِ

    For if it leaps, it becomes caught fast in it or chokes;

    and if it weakens and slackens, it is there for the taking.

    So stillness cannot save it whenever it rests,

    nor does vigorous movement bring it relief.

    So it is with you: if you provoke me, they kneel down

    upon you—the rhymes—kneeling, never letting go.

    And if you fall silent, abased, without fighting back,

    the wasting sickness of grudges and rancor consumes you.
