    ثم أُردفْتَ ذلّة التصغيرِ

    You are Faḍl—'surplus'—and a thing's surplus is worthless;

    Then you were saddled with the indignity of the diminutive.

    زادك الله يا صغير الحقير

    The surplus was belittled, then made smaller still;

    May God increase you, O little one of the lowly!

    Then you were made lame, and deficiency encompassed you

    In a vile arse and a vile, afflicted body.

    Then you were made cold, and took revenge on fire,

    With a chill surpassing the bitterest cold.

    So souls' acceptance of you is, to my mind,

    A sign in you of the Subtle, the All-Aware.

    لعلى خُطّةٍ من التسخير

    Indeed, a people among whom you now find favor

    Must surely be under some compulsion;

    Or folk who, morning and evening, in refinement,

    Remain in the plight of a wretched pauper.

    So whenever they are granted a charming sham,

    The ornaments of forgery delight them.

    Like the Bedouins who have never seen fine wheat flour,

    And so prize barley bread.

    Likewise these folk have never seen the sea's depths,

    And so make much of a pool's water.

    O you, heavy upon hearts, yet light

    In the scales, below the weight of a date-stone's tiny groove.

    Fly insubstantial, and fall loathsome—at times

    Like an awn, and at others like Mount Thabīr.

    I call God to witness that your weight, to me,

    Is below that of a date-stone's tiny groove and its membrane.

    You are not—far be it from you—lowly; rather,

    You are, without doubt, among the lowliest of the lowly.
