أيقتُلُنيWill he kill me? منthe one who ليسthere is no ليfor me منهagainst him ناصرٌdefender
أيقتُلُني من ليس لي منه ناصرٌ
سواهexcept himself وأعوانيand my allies عليهagainst him مكارِمُهْhis noble qualities
سواه وأعواني عليه مكارِمُهْ
Will he kill me, when I have no defender against him
Shall he who hath none to defend him, save God, assail me?
Except himself, while my allies against him are his noble qualities?
And are not his virtues to me as a host?
أبىforbade ذاكthat أنَّthat الحلمَforbearance بينيbetween me وبينهand between him
أبى ذاك أنَّ الحلمَ بيني وبينه
وأنand that عُلُوَّloftiness القدرof rank فيَّon my behalf يخاصمُهْcontends with him
وأن عُلُوَّ القدر فيَّ يخاصمُهْ
Forbearance, standing between me and him, forbids that,
Would he consent that between him and me the distance
As does lofty rank, which contends with him on my behalf.
Should be bridged by patience, and by lofty rank contested?
