ماwhat بالُis the matter with ديناريْكَyour two dinars عنّيfrom me أعرضاthey turned away
وتصدَّياand they presented themselves لشكايتيfor my complaint وتعرَّضاand exposed themselves
Why have your two dinars turned away from me
Why do you turn away from me, denying
and invited my complaint and exposed themselves to it?
My plea, refusing to address my complaining?
أنقضتَhave you broken عزمكَyour resolve ليتwould that شعريmy knowledge فيهماconcerning the two of them
حاشاfar be it لعزمكِfrom your resolve فيin الندىgenerosity أنto يُنقضاbe broken
Have you broken your resolve concerning them? If only I knew!
You resolved, but then unresolved; would that I knew—
Far be it from your resolve in generosity to be broken!
Never should your resolve waver and fade like the dew!
إنif كُنتَyou had فيtoward ثمنِthe cost of الحنوطِburial perfumes أمرْتَyou ordered ليfor me
بهماwith the two of them تركتُهُماI left the two of them إلىuntil أنthat أُقبَضاI am taken in death
If, toward the cost of burial perfumes, you had allotted me
If you told me to buy your balsam with coins
those two dinars, I have left them until I am taken in death.
I’d have left them untouched till I was laid in my groins
قدindeed طالhas lasted long تأميليmy hope غداًtomorrow وقدand already انقضىhas ended
عُمريmy life وعمرُand the life of المطلdelay in payment باقٍenduring ماnot انقضىhas ended
Long have I hoped for tomorrow, and now ended is
Long has my hope been deferred; tomorrow yet—
my life; yet the life of delay endures—it has not ended.
My life runs out, still the expectant lives free of regret
