أَحاطَsurrounded بحرمتيaround my honor ماwhat كانwas منِّيfrom me
وعفوكand your pardon واسعٌvast بهماaround them both مُحيطُencompassing
What I have done has hemmed in my honor,
My sins have surrounded my sanctity
yet your pardon is vast, encompassing both.
Yet Your forgiveness is vast, surrounding all
فماso why ليfor me أستقيلُI seek pardon ولاand no مُقيلٌone granting pardon
أضاقhas grown narrow? الرحبُthe spacious expanse وانقبضand contracted البسيطُthe broad expanse
Why, then, do I seek pardon, with no one to grant it?
Why should I despair when no one despairs me?
Has open space narrowed, and the broad expanse shrunk?
The vastness narrowed and the plain contracted
بغيتُI transgressed وأنتand you أولىmost worthy منone who تَغاضىshowed forbearance
لمعترفٍto one who confesses وقدand sometimes يبغيtransgresses الخليطُthe close companion
I transgressed, and you are most fit to show forbearance
I sinned, yet You are foremost in pardoning
to one who confesses; even a close companion may transgress.
A confessor, though fools mix right and wrong
وكمand how many منof عثرةa stumble لجوادِfor a noble steed قومٍa people
وماand not هوhe عندهمُin their eyes بئسَwretched الربيطُthe tethered steed
And how often a people's noble steed has stumbled,
How often a noble steed trips
yet in their eyes he is no unworthy tethered steed.
Yet to its rider it's no wretched mount
وإقراريand my admission بأنْthat لاno عُذرَexcuse عذرٌan excuse
يلوحُgleams كأنهas though it were الفلقُthe dawn الشَميطُwhite-streaked
And my admission that I have no excuse is itself an excuse,
My admitting no excuse can excuse
gleaming as though it were the white-streaked dawn.
Flashing like the bright rising dawn
ومنand among عجبwonders ذليلٌa humbled man مستكينٌsubmissive
يُطالبهُcalls him to account عزيزٌa mighty man مستشيطُfurious
And how strange: a humbled, submissive man
How strange! A base weakling
is called to account by a mighty man blazing with rage.
Assailed by an angry noble lord
أدلَّtook liberties عليكwith you إخلاصٌsincerity ونصحٌand good counsel
وودٌّand affection لاnot يميلwavers ولاnor يميطُturns aside
Sincerity and good counsel have made me bold with you,
Sincere loyalty counseled me
and affection that neither wavers nor turns aside.
Affection leaning neither way
فهبْso pardon جُرميmy offense لتأميليfor my hope فقِدْماًfor long ago
وهبتَyou pardoned الجُرمَthe crime وهوand it دمٌblood عبيطfresh
So pardon my offense for the sake of my hope; for long ago
So pardon my crime and favor me
you pardoned a crime, even when it was fresh-spilled blood.
You've pardoned crime, which is spilled blood
ولاand do not تُطِلprolong الفتورَreluctance عنfrom اصطناعيfavoring me
وأنتand you لكلfor every مكرُمةٍnoble deed نشيطeager
And do not prolong your reluctance to favor me,
Do not prolong estrangement from my service
when you are eager for every noble deed.
For You readily honor every noble act
وماand never زلتَyou ceased to be الذيthe one whose ريَّاfragrance نثاهُhis renown
كريَّاlike the fragrance الروضof the garden يثنيهِbends it السَّقيطthe dew
And you have always been the one whose fame's fragrance
You remain as You eternally were
is like the scent of a garden bowed by falling dew.
Watering the garden, training the twining vines
تيَقَّظَhe stayed awake للعُلاfor glory والمدَّعُوهاand those claiming it
لهمْthey have فيin نومهمtheir sleep عنهاheedless of it غطيطُsnoring
He stayed awake for glory, while those who claim it
You woke to loftiness, and those who pretend to it
snore in their sleep, heedless of it.
Snore in their sleep, to it oblivious
فكمso how much حُقنتْwas spared بصفحكَthrough your pardon منof دماءٍblood
محللةٍlawful to shed وقدand already كادتْhad almost تشيطُbe spilled
So how much blood has been spared through your pardon,
How many unlawful bloods have You forbidden
though lawful to shed and on the verge of being spilled!
That almost burst forth in violence
وكمand how many نِيلتwere gained بجودكthrough your generosity منof أحاظٍshares of good fortune
يبيتُlasts the night لرحلfor the pack-saddle صاحبهاtheir owner أطيطُcreaking
And how many bounties have been gained through your generosity,
How much good fortune have You bestowed
making their owner's pack-saddle creak through the night!
Though its seeker imagines only misery
وكيفand how تحيدُyou turn aside عنfrom سننِthe path المعاليof noble deeds
وبيتُكand your house بينهاamong them البيتُthe house الوسيطcentral
And how could you stray from the path of noble deeds,
How can You deviate from the ways of nobility?
when your house is the central house among them?
Your house is the middle house among them
