نُعيدُwe repeat أقاويلَsayings مَمْلولةًwearisome
نُعيدُ أقاويلَ مَمْلولةً
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle أُعيدتthey are repeated علىto السَّامعيناthe listeners
إذا ما أُعيدت على السَّامعينا
We repeat wearisome sayings,
We repeat worn out words
whenever they are repeated to listeners:
When repeated to listeners
فطوراًso, at times دعاءًa prayer بماfor what قدalready قَضَىhe decreed
فطوراً دعاءً بما قد قَضَى
بذلكin that regard قاضيthe Arbiter of القضاياaffairs جَنيناas an unborn child
بذلك قاضي القضايا جَنينا
sometimes, a prayer for what was already decreed
Sometimes a prayer for what was decreed
by the Arbiter of all affairs while one was still unborn;
By the Judge of judges secretly
وطوراًand at times ثناءًpraise بماwith what قدalready جَرىhas flowed
وطوراً ثناءً بما قد جَرى
قديماًof old علىupon ألسُنِthe tongues of العالميناhumankind
قديماً على ألسُنِ العالمينا
and sometimes, praise in words that have flowed
And sometimes praise for what has passed
of old upon the tongues of humankind.
Long ago on the tongues of people
وأنتَand you تعيدُyou repeat لناfor us نائلاًa bounty
وأنتَ تعيدُ لنا نائلاً
إعادتُهits repetition مُنْيَةُthe desire الراغبيناof the seekers
إعادتُه مُنْيَةُ الراغبينا
Yet you renew a bounty for us,
While you repeat to us, attaining
whose renewal is the seekers' desire.
Repetition, the death of the hopeful
فشتانَso far apart شتانَfar apart ماwhat بينناbetween us
فشتانَ شتانَ ما بيننا
لقدindeed فُتَّyou outstripped بالفضلِin excellence فوتاًa surpassing مبيناclear
لقد فُتَّ بالفضلِ فوتاً مبينا
How far, how far apart we are!
What a difference, what a difference between us
Indeed, you have plainly outstripped us in excellence.
You have clearly missed excellence
أقولI say لطُلّابِto the seekers of ماwhat نِلتَهyou attained it
أقول لطُلّابِ ما نِلتَه
قُصاركُمُyour utmost نَيْلهattaining it واصفيناas describers
قُصاركُمُ نَيْله واصفينا
I say to those seeking what you have attained:
I say to students of what you attained
Your utmost is to attain it through description.
Your attaining it, though lauders
صِفُوهdescribe it ووفُّوهُand give it its full due حقاًa due لهowed to it
صِفُوه ووفُّوهُ حقاً له
منof الوصفdescription نَعْدُدكُمُwe shall count you فاضليناdistinguished
من الوصف نَعْدُدكُمُ فاضلينا
Describe it and give it its due
Describe it and fulfil it truly for him
in your description, and we shall count you distinguished.
We count you excellent describers
وَوَفدand a delegation ثناءٍof praise أناخواthey made their camels kneel بهbeside him
وَوَفد ثناءٍ أناخوا به
عفاةًpetitioners لمعروفهfor his bounty آمليناhoping
عفاةً لمعروفه آملينا
And a delegation bearing praise made their camels kneel beside him,
And a delegation of praise visited him
as petitioners, hoping for his bounty.
Hopeful for his good deed
فآبواso they returned وقدْand already صُدِّقُواthey were proved truthful آمليhoping (continued)
فآبوا وقدْ صُدِّقُوا آملي
نَending of 'hoping' وفقاًin accord لماwith how صُدِّقُواthey were proved truthful مادحيناas praisers
نَ وفقاً لما صُدِّقُوا مادحينا
So they returned, their hopes fulfilled,
So they came having been proven truthful, hopeful
just as their praises had been confirmed.
And successful according to what they were proven praisers
كذلكthus راجوهُthose who hope in him والمادحوand those who praise
كذلك راجوهُ والمادحو
هُhim لاnot يكذبونthey lie ولاnor يُكذَبوناthey are lied to
هُ لا يكذبون ولا يُكذَبونا
Thus those who hope in him and those who praise
That is what they hoped for, and the praisers
him neither lie nor are lied to.
Do not lie, nor are they lied to
