We have indeed seen a wonder among wonders,

Between Jumada and Jumada and Rajab,

From a Dhanabani who overstepped his bounds:

So guilt and the tail came together upon him.

A foreign boor who rose rank after rank,

Though he was unworthy of those ranks.

Then he slipped from those heights with a fall

That left him on the brink of destruction.

And thus every ascent to lofty eminence

Is soon followed by a rise into distress.

God endowed him, yet he gave Him no thanks,

And you will never see gratitude in one of tainted lineage.

So God gave his ignorance power over him,

And it became the strongest cause of his destruction.

An army approached, not wishing to fight him,

So he panicked with the dread that besets those under suspicion.

And he thought ill of a minister who had never betrayed

    A pledge—and does stored-away gold ever rust?

He left no act that would lead to his death

Without doing it zealously; then he fell into confusion.

He was like one who feared a fire already blazing,

So added to it firewood upon firewood.

How likely that a fragment of it should engulf him,

Its scorching blast finishing him even without the flame.

Look at him and at his planning,

For in it is a wonder among wonders.

He terrorized a child, though terrorizing him was not

Tactful handling, nor the taking of precautions.

And he angered the lords with a wrath driven

Toward him by a wrath from God that had become due.

Then he saw that his judgment had not been granted success,

So he released the child and passed the evening in dread.

So he dwells between fear and death

Because of what he did—or between fear and destitution.

And thus the ignorant man has always, from of old,

Through his ignorance, been in weariness and toil.

He bought long sleeplessness with slumber,

And sold long tranquillity for toil.

I likened his claim to carry out what

He was entrusted with to his claim of Arab descent.

I said, when I was told of his helplessness

And that he was amid sighs and distress:

Away with one who, in his fortunes, began the morning

On a lofty ascent, and reached evening on a downward slope!

What have his horses done, conditioned as they are?

Have they neither flight nor pursuit in them?

Rather, his cowardice bars them from charging,

And his doom bars him from flight.

How ugly is good fortune when he is clothed in its robe,

And how fair that good fortune when stripped from him!

What he was given was not of his own earning,

Yet it left him because of what he earned.

O spurner of blessing, know for certain that

God has become utterly wrathful on its behalf.

And you will never see God as a protector of a man

Who opposes Abu al-Saqr, the chosen minister.

And whoever opposes one who is in the right and prospering,

Then, in his affairs, he is in [unclear text: “and he wrote”].

And praise be to God, whose majesty is great,

For what He has bestowed, conferred, and given.
